Inaugural Meeting

Topic:
This inaugural meeting is being held to plan the activities of Life Member Chapter in the Vancouver Section. Ron Potts, Life Member Chapter Coordinator for Region 7, will be travelling from Hamilton to make a presentation on the organization of LM Chapters in Canada and the types of activities that they have undertaken. The initial purpose of the LM Chapters is to use the resources of the 1000 Life Members in the organization in IEEE activities. The meeting will discuss the potential interest of this Chapter in the following activities:

  • Undertake a local inventory analysis of LMs;
  • Host meetings and social events of interest to LMs;
  • Promote recognition of the history of British Columbia EE technologies within IEEE Canada and identify Engineering Milestones within BC;
  • Interface with the Engineering Institute of Canada LMs;
  • Recommend award nominees to the IEEE Awards and Recognitions Committee;
  • Offer career advice, especially within Student Branches (and at High School level);
  • Cooperate with the Section Executive to encourage/facilitate Member upgrades to Senior Member.

Speaker: Ron Potts, an IEEE member since 1957, was appointed Life Member Chapter Co-ordinator in 2000 to start the Life Member organization in Region 7 by the then Region 7 President, Dave Kemp. In his working career, Ron was Vice President & Manager of Acres International Iron & Steel Division in Hamilton Ont. He retired from Acres International in 1987 but acted as Consultant for them subsequently. Ron became involved in the Steel Industry in 1963 as an Electrical Project Manager. He spent time before that in commisioning Elk Falls in Cambell River, Kelsey in Manitoba and Baie Comeau in Quebec.

Lunch: You can meet the speaker at an informal luncheon in the BC Hydro Cafereria starting at 12:00 noon.
