IEEE Vancouver Section

Foundation of a Life Member Affiliate Group

July 31, 2002

As a result of the invitation extended at the AGM by the incoming Section Chairman for Life Members to play a more active role in the Section, an Ad Hoc Committee has been formed to take action to form a Life Member Chapter or Affiliate Group. The members of the Ad Hoc Committee are:

  • George Davies, Life Member
  • Ed Frazer, Life Senior Member
  • Ed Jull, Life Fellow
  • Alan Liggins, Life Member
  • KD Srivastava, Life Fellow
  • Nigel Smith-Gander, Life Senior Member
  • George Davies has been appointed Acting Chairman.

The Committee met to prepare for a second meeting with Wally Read, past President of the IEEE, who has a responsibility within IEEE to encourage Life Member activities.

Life Member Chapters are just getting started in Region 7 in Eastern and Central Canada. Initial Region 7 planning has been directed towards forming a LM Chapter involving all the Sections in Western Canada. In discussion, Wally Read suggested that, with a membership of some 130 Life Members and the interest which has been developed, the Vancouver Section might well wish to establish a LM Chapter on its own. We are proceeding on this basis. An application will be developed and presented to the IEEE for a LM Chapter to be formed as an Affiliate Group of the Vancouver Section. We are planning to hold the first meeting of the Chapter in October at a time, date and place yet to be decided.

In discussion, it was agreed that the major activities of the planned Chapter could include:

  • Undertake a local inventory analysis of LMs;
  • Host meetings and social events of interest to LMs;
  • Promote recognition of the history of British Columbia EE technologies within IEEE Canada and identify Engineering Milestones within BC;
  • Interface with the Engineering Institute of Canada LMs;
  • Recommend award nominees to the IEEE Awards and Recognitions Committee;
  • Offer career advice, especially within Student Branches (and at High School level);
  • Cooperate with the Section Executive to encourage/facilitate Member upgrades to Senior Member.

Comments and suggestions from Life Members and any other IEEE member will be welcome. We will appreciate your input as our planning proceeds. Please contact George Davies, 604-535-7182 or e-mail george_davies@telus.net .
