The IEEE Xtreme Challenge is back!

The IEEE Xtreme Challenge is a global 24-hour online contest where IEEE Student Branch teams solve a challenging set of programming problems.
This year the competition starts on the 24th October at 00:00:00 UTC.

The competitors can win:

  • Fame: Competing in the world's most Xtreme programming contest is a big deal -- winning means you get unlimited bragging rights.
  • Fortune: Grand prize is a trip to the IEEE Conference of your choice, anywhere in the world. Other prizes include cool gear and prizes from sponsors.

So if you are a Student Branch get ready to organise the competition: find a room with an internet connection, a proctor (who should be an IEEE Member of higher membership grade), maybe some food and drinks for your teams and let the students know about the IEEE Xtreme Challenge!

Teams can be made of up to three participants that need to be IEEE student or graduate student members of your IEEE Student Branch. If you know of some good student programmers that are not yet IEEE members, encourage them to join IEEE so that they can compete in one of your teams!
Note that each Student Branch can have as many teams as it wants. Last year Region 8 had 57 teams competing in the IEEE Xtreme Challenge (over 130 teams in total in the world). How about doubling this number this year?

First IEEE Power and Energy Summer Summit

On September 9-10 2009, the IEEE Student Branch Ilmenau will hold the first "IEEE Power and Energy Summer Summit" which should become an annual event with changing location. The main objective is to bring representatives from the industry and students preparing their bachelor or master thesis together. The event will be divided into two sections. The first part will be a workshop. There the students will have the opportunity to present their current work and the representatives will show how innovative and attractive their companies are. During a special reception before dinner, GOLD and student members will get the possibility to talk about the transition to young professionals and the benefits IEEE could provide.

On the basis of this general information exchange the participants will be able to get in touch during the second part of the event. A sightseeing tour in Ilmenau, a visit of the labs of the Technical University, a dinner and a technical trip to the pump storage power plant in Goldisthal are planned for this second half of the event.
