On Friday the 13th, April 2012, the Student Branch JKU Linz organized an excursion to the nuclear power plant Zwentendorf, the safest one in the world. The 16 participants had the opportunity to learn about the state of the civil nuclear technology of the 1970's which is still employed in some nuclear power plants in various European countries. Due to the fact, that the power plant has never been activated, it is possible to have a unique look at machinery which is not normally accessible due to radiation, e. g. the inside of the storage tank for the primary coolant fluid or the reactor chamber. The principles and functions of the machinery were explained by very competent guides who were also able to compare the technology of Zwentendorf to the one employed in Fukushima. The tour was concluded by a small buffet provided by the current owner of the power plant, EVN.  |

On Thursday, March 8th, the IEEE SB JKU Linz went to the AKH Linz for a tour of its technical utilities. The excursion was organized by our secretary Bernd Gruber. The head of the department of medical technology, Mr. Buhl, gave us a very interesting 1.5 hour tour of the technical installations. The tour covered the pneumatic delivery system as well as the in house rail based transport system. The electrical installations were especially interesting and included the emergency power system consisting of diesel engines and the continuous power supply which is mainly based on flywheels. The distribution of medical gases like oxygen, C02, nitrogen, etc. as well as other in-house systems such as waste disposal, laundry, etc. were also covered.
Thanks to Mr. Buhl we learned a lot about the technical equipment which is required for the operation of a modern hospital. In the future it might be possible to organize a tour of the medical equipment of a surgery in the AKH.
