Cultural Evening

IEEE TechSym 2010 in association with Association for Supporting Marginalized Aspirations (ASMA) presents a cultural evening with dance performance of school children, choreography, baul song and Santali dance program.

The Baul songs are a very specialized branch of Bengali folk songs. Baul song has a kind of hippie-like attraction to it. It is unique in itself, yet it seems to hold in it a lot of elements of the other branches of Bengali folk musical traditions.

The Santal people celebrate the festivals - both religious and social with dance and music. Like other Indian people groups, their culture has been influenced by mainstream Indian culture and by Western culture, but traditional music and dance still remain. Santal music differs from Hindustani classical music in significant ways. They use traditional musical instruments - Madal, Dhamsa and Kendra are the three predominating instruments famous for their tribal origin. Madal and Dhamsa are classified as percussion or Rhythmic Instruments and Kendra is a String Instrument played with a bow. Madal has an earthen body while the body of Dhamsa is made of Iron. Animal skin is used to cover Dhamsa and Madal. The sound of Madal is melodious and intoxicating. The flute was considered the most important Santal traditional instrument and still evokes feelings of nostalgia for many Santal. Santal dance and music traditionally revolved around Santal religious celebrations. Santal music and dance both retain connections to traditional celebrations.

A Choreography "Nari" based on the concept of a woman, as seen by Rabindranath.

Two dance numbers will be presented by the underprivileged children of Balarampur, Khelapara center.
