MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL INVENTION EXPO 2004
RULES AND REGULATIONS

A. General

  1. Contest is open to all students pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies in universities / higher learning institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.
  2. Each team must comprise of three individuals from their respective university / higher learning institutions i.e. 3 students or 2 students and 1 advisor. The advisor can be a student or lecturer.
  3. Participating teams will be representing their respective universities / higher learning institutions. Therefore, application is associated with a university / higher learning institutions and not a specific team.
  4. It is advisable for each university / higher learning institutions to send only one team. Additional teams requesting participation may be considered by the organizers.
  5. The entry must be the original idea and work product of the participating team, and may not have been:
    • made available to the public as a commercial product
    • patented or published prior to the date of submission to the competition
  6. The invention, a reduced-to-practice idea or workable model, must be the work of a student or team of students with his or her university advisor.
  7. The participating team will be required to stage a 10-minute presentation of the invention to the judges.
  8. The invention should be reproducible.
  9. The diamond sponsor will have the priority to commercialize the inventions submitted to the contest. Terms of commercialization will be strictly between the inventors and the diamond sponsor.

B. Eligibility

  1. Contestants must invent a product that could be used and marketed in today’s economy.
  2. There are no size limitations. However, the invention should be capable of being displayed for demonstration at a partition of 10 feet long x 6 feet wide x 8 feet high.
  3. A working prototype must be available at the time of judging.
  4. Invention can be mechanical but must be electrical or electronically-driven.
  5. Invention should be original. It should not be cosmetic modification of an existing product i.e. it cannot be a patent that merely cosmetically changes a product already available. However, modification of existing technology on devices for different purposes is allowed.
  6. Product should be designed for use by the general consumer market and not for industrial or trade use.
  7. Contestants are required to set up their display prior to the beginning of the competition.
  8. Contestants must be at hand to demonstrate and explain their invention to the judges during the competition.
C. Category

Theme : “ Future Household Devices ”
Electrical & Electronics Devices – Products that are battery or electrically powered and are designed for the consumers at home.

Examples of inventions:

  1. Door Answering Machine – A door mounted recording device which allow you to leave personal outgoing messages as well as receive private incoming messages from visitors when you are not home.
  2. Pet Locator – A device that allows an owner to locate a lost pet using a Global Positioning System (GPS) that notifies the owner directly of their pet’s whereabouts without a third party’s service.

    * Please note that only 240 voltage (single phase) source will be provided for demonstration. If higher or lower voltage source is needed, please bring your own transformer.

D. Criteria For Judging

  1. Entries will be evaluated based on the following criteria by the judges assigned by the organizers:
    • Originality of concept
    • Creativity
    • Reliability
    • Benefit to the user
    • Safety
    • Production feasibility
    • Potential value to society (socially, environmentally, and economically)
    • Physical Design
    • Presentation to the judges.
  2. All judges’ decisions are final.

 

Organizers
