![]() Every semester, the ASU IEEE Student Branch plans an extraordinary event called the Student-Faculty-Industry Mixer. One Friday a semester, the Student branch brings together students, faculty, and industry in an extremely casual environment. The mixer is very similar to a career fair, with a few minor differences. First, the student branch provides food and beverages, music, and entertainment for all attendees, including a raffle. Second, the mixer is more intimate than a career fair. While some career fairs have thousands of attendees, our mixers attract only 100-200 students, most from engineering disciplines. There are three tiers to this event. The first tier includes the students. The mixer gives a chance for students to meet others in similar backgrounds in a casual setting. Often, students have a chance to talk to classmates who otherwise would not interact on a standard day. The second tier includes the faculty and staff. The mixer gives faculty a chance to leave behind the rigid structure of classrooms and office hours and interact with students on a casual basis. Previous mixers have included faculty-student volleyball games. The third tier is industry. The student branch invites local, national, and international companies to set up shop and directly communicate with students. Companies send 1-2 representatives to talk with students and collect resumes. This gives the students a chance to interact and practice thier interview skills while in a casual environment. No suits or ties are ever present at the Mixer. Companies such as Freescale, APS, Microsoft, National Instruments, Analog Device, Texas Instruments, and Motorola have been strong supporters of the student branch's mixers for years.
