Background
In 2009, the UCT IEEE Student Branch secured 20 Personal Computers (PC's) from the UCT Engineering and Built Environment (EBE) Faculty with a view to donating these machines to a High School in the Western Cape. The PC's are 3-4 years old and were being replaced as part of the Faculty's cyclical PC laboratory technological upgrades.

Project Specification
Based on the above, the objectives of the 2010 IEEE EPICS-High Project at UCT are as follows:
1.Through work with its NGO partners, the UCT IEEE Student Branch will secure adequate funding to install a 20 PC lab at Oaklands High School in Lansdowne
2.Work with learners from Oaklands High School and Oude Molen Technical High to conduct an energy audit on the power consumed by the PC lab
3.Guide the learners towards a specification of an alternative energy-based solution to reduce power consumption from the national grid. The specification will include all relevant technical information such as calculations, required power, diagrams, etc
4.Undertake a model or prototype building stage of the project based on the above specifications in (3)
5.Commission the full installation of the PC lab and accompanying alternative energy structures
6.Develop a simple software system to assist the learners in using the PC’s in the installed lab
7.Develop an IEEE-branded poster for the project that will be copied and displayed at both schools
8.Submit a full report on the 2010 EPICS-High Project
The stated objectives will be achieved through the use of a dedicated Projects Committee (IEEE Student Branch, University of Cape Town) providing oversight for the duration of the project execution. The Projects Committee will organize and host regular project sessions with the learners during which the audit, specification and subsequent model construction will be carried out. The Committee will also ensure, through work with partners, that funding for the project is secured and the lab is delivered on time.
As part of its commitment to the IEEE EPICS-High initiative; the UCT IEEE Student Branch will also engage the relevant stakeholders in order to register UCT as an EPICS site.
