Farad:The unit of measure for capacitance. It is the capacitance of a capacitor in which an applied voltage of one volt will store a charge of one coulomb. The more practical units of capacitance are the microfarad and picofarad.
Filament:In a directly heated electron tube, a heating element which also serves as the emitter.
Forward Bias:A dc voltage applied to a PN junction semiconductor so that the positive terminal of the voltage source connects to the P-type material and the negative terminal to the N-type material. It produces forward current in the circuit.
Forward Current:Current in a circuit of a semiconductor device due to conduction by majority carriers across the PN junction.
Float Charge: The third stage of three-stage battery charging. After batteries reach full charge, charging voltage is reduced to a lower level to reduce gassing (boiling of electrolyte) and prolong battery life. This is also referred to as a maintenance charge, since rather than charging a battery, it keeps an already charged battery from self-discharging. A low rate of charge that will maintain a battery at a full SOC without overcharging the battery.
Fuse or Disconnect: An electrical pressure relief valve. When current exceeds a preset limit, the fuse or disconnect will fail before the wiring or equipment it is protecting. Disconnects are also called circuit breakers. These are usually resettable and can act as a switch to turn off power to equipment for servicing.
