Elaine Pope Wins Award
At the IEEE Phoenix Section awards banquet held in January 1998, Elaine Pope received the Senior Engineer of the Year Award. Elaine has been a very active volunteer for both the Phoenix CPMT chapter and as a board of governor member and officer. This recognition was for her continued commitment to IEEE through a variety of leadership positions including Vice President of CPMT, officer in local Phoenix chapter, promoting senior level grade status, and author of 19 technical papers.
Elaine mentioned, "Reading Have Space Ship Will Travel by Robert Heinlein in grade 5 initiated my interest in physics and engineering." Elaine works at Intel which she chose "because it was a large company with focus on people—the best of a small company environment and large company technical capabilities." Starting with Intel Santa Clara in 1982 she moved to Arizona in 1984. Since 1996 Elaine has worked in Platform Integration for Assembly Technology Development. She coordinates a multifunctional multidisciplinary team to optimize electrical/thermal/mechanical performance, reliability, cost targets, factory yield and capacity, and time to market for Intel’s high end processor line.
Elaine graduated from MIT with a BS in Materials Science and Engineering and an MS in Material Science. She has an MBA from the University of Phoenix. Elaine offers this advice for young women interested in an engineering career: "Recognize that engineering is accessible, start to prepare for an engineering curriculum early—middle school. Take math and science classes, but don’t skimp on the liberal arts, especially writing. Participate in science and engineering activities in school and the community. Find summer jobs in related fields.
