Getting your Own Email Alias

TO: All CPMT Society Volunteers and Members

We encourage each CPMT member to get an email "redirection" alias, of the form "p.wesling@ieee.org". Who should do it?

Here's what happens when people use your new alias: one of us sends an email address to this alias; the IEEE server in New Jersey checks attachments for viruses, then forwards it to your "real" email address at your company, university, or ISP. This delays the message about 10 minutes.

What are the advantages?

  • First of all, it's a "portable" address: it stays the same, for the next few decades, even as your company email address changes, or you change to a different ISP. It's your one PERMANENT email address.
  • Some people have cryptic email addresses ("12345.678@compuserve.com", "sugar.baby@aol.com", or "vrp54@email.xxx.com"), and others have NO idea who you are from this address; your IEEE alias is the solution.
  • You can change your forwarding (real) email address at any time; it becomes effective within 12 hours.
  • Having an IEEE alias helps the rest of the CPMT organization to easily "construct" your email address: we can even guess what it should be, since the format is always the same (if you follow the normal format).
  • It costs you nothing -- a free service, to help our Society in its operations.

And it's easy! Simply point your browser to:
        IEEE's alias maintenance site.

Fill in the form with your Last Name, First name, and Middle Name/Initial, your IEEE member number (*), your real email address, and your volunteer position if you have one (we suggest the Major Volunteer Activity start with: "CPMT _________" ) Within hours the server will construct your alias (probably first_initial.middle_initial.last_name@ieee.org), and confirm it to you.

Maintenance is just as simple: enter your alias, your IEEE member number (*), and your new/changed "real" email address into the form on the web page above; within 12 hours the change is in effect. If you forget how to find the IEEE template, see the CPMT Home Page at http://www.cpmt.org .

If you'd like to do this by email, rather than over the Web, send a note to p.wesling@ieee.org, and I'll send you the template in an email version, for fillout and submission to the email automated processor.

(*) If you're a CPMT volunteer who is NOT an IEEE member (perfectly acceptable, of course!), then it'll take you one more step: email your name/address/phone/email and volunteer position information to p.wesling@ieee.org, and we'll assign a special 8-digit number that'll be your code to use instead of an IEEE member number.

Get on-board the future in internet communication -- get an IEEE email alias!

    Best regards,
    Paul
