CPMT PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer and that you are looking forward to the many forthcoming technical conferences and workshops being sponsored by CPMT this Fall.
In our continued effort to provide value to our members, I would like to announce a CPMT product, which will be available May 2000. This year we launched a project to bring all our Transactions' issues onto a set of CD-ROMs. This spans the years from 1952 thru 1998 and includes our archives under 12 or more different Transactions titles. The six CD sets will be finished May 2000, in time for our 50th Anniversary celebration at the 50th Electronics Components and Technology Conference (ECTC) which will be held in Las Vegas, NV, May 2000. How do you extend this CD-ROM collection? Starting in 1999 Transactions papers are available to our subscribers at our On-line Periodicals and Research Area (OpeRA) website. All subsequent years' Transactions papers will also be available at this website. I would like to thank Paul Wesling, our V.P. Publications, who is spearheading this effort.
At the IEEE Technical Advisory Board (TAB) meeting held June 23
to 26, 1999, which I attended, there were considerable discussions
about the proposed New Financial Model, Streamlining and Branding
for IEEE. The committee's were given the input of TAB and asked
to reconsider portions of the proposals. A vote on the modified
proposals is expected to be taken at the November TAB meeting.
As part of the IEEE Millennium celebration, each Society has been
asked to nominate members for the award of an IEEE Millennium
Medal. These will be members who have been-long time contributors
to their Societies. I have asked our Board of Governors to provide
me with member nominations for a Millennium Medal. Consideration
is also being given to members who have been long-time contributors
to their Chapters and graduates of the last decade (GOLD) who
have been major CPMT contributors. CPMT has been allotted 17 Millennium
Medals.
For the past 4 months, I served on an IEEE Committee focusing on how to improve the participation of working engineers in IEEE Societies. One of the proposals put forward is the preparation of a best practices booklet on "Attracting Industry Members" to be prepared for use by Societies in encouraging industry to support employee membership in the IEEE.
Finally I would again like to urge our membership to participate in your CPMT Chapters as an excellent way to locally network with your peers. Marsha Tickman (+1-732-562-5529) or Ralph Russell (+1-804-273-2216) can assist you in identifying a chapter near you.
