Your Board Meets in Newark

President Rao Tummala opened the meeting by introducing new members of the CPMT Board of Governors: Rolf Aschenbrenner a new Member at Large, Hansjorg Griese the Chair of TC-21 on Green Electronics Manufacturing and Packaging, Peter Slota the General Chair of the upcoming ECTC, Wayne Howell the Program Chair of the upcoming ECTC, and Bill Brown the Program Director of CPMT student membership. Approximately 30 volunteers showed up to debate and vote on the many action items underway to make careers better for CPMT members.

Rao set the tone of the meeting by reminding the Board of the main points of the CPMT vision:

Our next year's plan includes:

Global Strategy

It was decided that next year the fall Board meeting will be held November 9 and 10th after the large trade show Productronica in Munich and before the Area Array workshop in Berlin. The exact place is left for the local Board members and Chapter to determine.

Treasurer Merrill Palmer presented the concluding predictions of the year 2000 budget as well as the now firmed up budget 2001 (see treasurer's report). Ralph Wyndrum, Director of IEEE section I, mentioned that this year the IEEE budget was being watched very carefully to make sure the revenue and expenses of any one item ended up in the same place.

Rao Bonda listed the 10 candidates for the next election for CPMT "Members at Large" to serve on the Board of Governors.Several members of the Fellows committee mentioned that CPMT is nominating a consistently better prepared set of candidates than in the past. Results of this year will be known by the end of November. Other awards being initiated include recognition of contribution letters to volunteers (and their companies), spot cash awards (dinner for two), and service 5 year gifts for those that keep their CPMT membership.

Al Puttlitz revealed the details of the Las Vegas ECTC. There were 1300 attendees of which more than 1000 paid. About 540 took part in the short courses. Next year the target is 14 short courses. Two of the new offerrings that are for sure include "Systems on Package" by Rao Tummala and "PBGA Assemblies" by John Lau. He also announced that Mr. Jong-Soo Lee from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology won the Motorola-CPMT fellowship.

Hansjorg Griese reported on the just completed "Electronics Goes Green" Conference. There were 535 participants. Sixty percent were from industry and 31% from science institutes. About 1/3 of the speakers were from Germany, 1/3 from the rest of Europe, 19% from Asia, and 9% from the U.S.A. This successful meeting will be repeated every 4 or 5 years.

Jim Morris, VP of Conferences, announced that the Poly workshop was now 100% run by CPMT but that in a few years it would be merged with Polytronic, as would the Adhesive conference.

Bill Brown discussed the steps being taken to increase the exposure of CPMT Society to students. Under discussion are Board members going on campus, student-only poster session, student website, student column in the newsletter, pizza and beer parties for all EE students with a distinguished CPMT lecturer, and a one page tutorial article on packaging in "IEEE potentials".

Anthony Chan, Administrative Vice President, announced that the future Board meetings will be

Ralph Russell reported on the Marketing Committee. There was an attempt to define our constituency for Newsletter, Transactions, Conferences, and Awards. All of them are different varying from the 3600 CPMT members to a pool of 50,000 in our industries. We want all of our output to have the same look and feel so that CPMT becomes more recognizable. A simple 'tag line' for CPMT is requested. Jack Balde suggested "putting it all together". Our goal is to grow the membership by 3% / year mostly outside of the USA. Each year about 1000 in CPMT forget to renew, a similar percentage to other IEEE Societies.

Societies in Division I that are growing are either in 'hot areas" like LEOS or most of their membership is in the bay area such as Solid State Circuits Society where companies tend to pay for professional organization dues. Our growth strategy includes Distinguished lectures, permanent membership category, expand on-line information access, use membership directors, expand regional chapters, recruit at more conferences, make our CPMT brochure in several languages.

We have a new approved CPMT Chapter in Greece and one well along the way in Malaysia. We are encouraging Chapters in France and Isreal also. There are concentrations of members in Spain, Mexico, Ireland, and Shanghai which could benefit from Chapter formation..

Koji Nehei reported on activities in Japan. He indicated that the name of the annual EMI/IMC meeting has been changed to ICEP, International Conference on Electronics Packaging.

Funds were set aside for delegations to Hong Kong, Singapore, and the VLSI Japan workshop. It looks like at least 4 Board of Governors members will be able to make each meeting.
