TC-12 : Technical Committee on Electrical

Design, Modeling and Simulation

Meeting Minutes

The meeting was held at the Radisson Resort, Scottsdale, Arizona on Oct 22, 2000, a day prior to the 9th Topical Meeting on Electrical Performance of Electronic Packaging, EPEP `00.

The meeting was attended by Ravi Kaw (Agilent), Moises Cases (IBM), Jaya Bandhyopadyay (Cisco), Luc Martens (Univ. of Ghent), Larry Smith (SUN), Mahadevan Iyer (IME), Alina Deutsch (IBM), Andreas Weisshaar (OSU), Om Madhana (Motorola), Dylan Williams (NIST), Y.L. Li (Intel), Ching Chao Huang (Rambus), Joungho Kim (KAIST), Dale Becker (IBM), George Katopis (IBM) and Madhavan Swaminathan (GIT).

Various important topics were discussed which are listed below:

1) The committee welcomed its newest members Dr. Om Mandhana from Motorola, Austin and Prof. Paul Franzon from NC State University. Dr. Mandhana brings a lot of expertise in the areas of power distribution, package modeling and signal integrity to the committee. Prof. Franzon is a recognized expert in the area of Systems Level Packaging.

2) Jaya proposed that the member list be updated and a group alias be created for the committee. This proposal was passed. Jaya will be contacting the members for updating the information.

3) CPMT society requires reviewers in the electrical design area. Committee members have been
requested to send bios of reviewers to Madhavan who will in turn send it to Paul Wesling (VP of Publications, CPMT). The deadline for this submission is Nov 3. All committee members will serve as reviewers. In addition, the members can propose the names of their friends and colleagues.

4) The committee has nominated George Katopis, Paul Franzon (NC State) and Luc Martens to serve as distinguished lecturers for the society. These members will be the TC-12 representatives. Alina will be providing these names to Paul Wesling. In addition, Mahadevan Iyer may propose a name from Asia.

5) Both Mahadevan and Luc gave updates from the TC activities in Asia and Europe. Unfortunately, Grabinski (Univ. of Hannover) could not attend the meeting due to sickness. It was proposed that sub-committees be formed both in Asia and Europe to represent the TC. This was approved. Both Mahadevan and Luc will form these committees shortly and send the list to Madhavan.

Mahadevan proposed that TC-12 (subcommittee in Asia) would like to organize a workshop on Electrical Design to promote this area in the region. He requested support from TC-12.

6) The TC would like to maintain a list of conferences that its members participate in. The participation could be at various capacities such as session chair, session organizer, technical chair etc. Please send a list to Moises for inclusion in the web page.

7) Alina gave an update on the Future Directions in IC and package Design workshop to be held on Oct 27, 2001. This will be held a day prior to EPEP `01 and will be free for attendees registered at EPEP. The workshop is being organized by TC-12 with sponsorship from IEEE CPMT society. Further information is available at www.cpmt.org/conf/fdip01/fdip.html.

8) Alina provided an update on web based tutorials for the CPMT society. These will be sponsored by the CPMT society and the speakers will be given an honorarium to cover costs. Ravi suggested that two well attended courses from EPEP should be considered for the tutorial. Larry Smith has volunteered to teach a course.

In addition, it was suggested that selected papers from major conferences be taped and made available on the web for IEEE members.

9) Madhavan indicated that we need references to post on the web site. He'll be contacting the members to obtain inputs.

10) CPMT newsletter is published quarterly. In theSep `00 issue, write-ups from Mahadevan and Grabinski on TC-12 activities in Asia and Europe were well received. It was suggested that members contribute for future issues to make the TC more global. Madhavan will coordinate this activity. In the next issue, we'll have contributions from Ravi (on EPEP `00) and Madhavan (on TC-12 meeting minutes).

11) Alina volunteered to post student resumes and job openings on the CPMT web site. This could be an attractive feature for both companies and universities.

12) James Libous and Madhavan will be organizing two electrical sessions at Interpack `01 as part of the TC-12 activities. These sessions have been approved by the Interpack committee.
