Held at The Sheraton, Singapore on December 7, 2000
(This TC meeting was held in conjunction with EPTC 2000 Conference)
We had a successful Technical Committee on Materials & Processes (TC-5) meeting in Singapore, held on December 7, 2000 in conjunction with EPTC2000 conference. The purpose of the meeting was to welcome the potential TC-5 members from Asia and Europe. The meeting was well attended and well received: Rick Bressers - Phillips Netherlands, William Chen - IMRE Singapore, K. S. Chiang - Nanyang Tech University, Alex Kader - OSE in UK, Charles Lee - Infineon Tech, Johan Liu - Chalmers University of Tech, Kyung Park - KAIST Korea, John Pang - Nanyang Tech University, Somnuek Thongprasert- AMD Thailand, Paul Wesling - Compaq, Rajen Chanchani - Sandia Labs. The following items were discussed.
1. As the present chair of TC-5, Rajen Chanchani presented the current mission, membership and status of the technical committee.
2. Six new members indicated a desire to participate in the TC-5 committee.
3. It was decided to hold two TC-5 meeting in a year. One
meeting will continue to be held in conjunction with annual ECTC
conference in US and the second meeting will be held in fall every
year either in Asia or in Europe, in conjunction with a major
IEEE-CPMT sponsored conference in the region outside USA.
4. Next year's TC-5 meetings will be held during ECTC Conference at Orlando and the fall meeting will be held in Korea in November during EMAP 2001 conference. Rajen Chanchani and K. W. Paik will work together to arrange the Korea meeting. Dr. Paik will also provide details of EMAP conference to Rajen for the approval of IEEE-CPMT sponsorship from the CPMT Board of Governors (BOG).
5. Majority of the committee members were interested in understanding the process of getting the approval of IEEE-CPMT sponsorship for materials-related conferences-workshop. Rajen explained the process. Whenever any group of people wants to organize a conference/workshop, they should gather information like the details of the technical program and the number of people expected to attend. With that information, Rajen (TC-5 chair) will approach CPMT BOG for approval.
6. We will create an email list of IEEE-CPMT members with interest in electronic materials. Any news that will be of interest will be circulated.
7. Dr. Johan Liu proposed holding a 'Lead-free Solders' conference in Sweden. He will work on the details and provide Rajen with the details for CPMT BOG approval of IEEE-CPMT sponsorship.
8. Charles Lee suggested a dialogue box in TC-5 home web page for the members to communicate with each other. Rajen will look into it.
