CPMT Chapter Activities Report
Our CPMT Society Chapters are active globally and are providing value to their local members. This article will highlight the activities of the CPMT Chapters in San Diego, India, Hong Kong, Daejon, and Sweden.
Prof. Kyung W. Paik, KAIST, reports that the CPMT Daejon Chapter is organizing the 2001 EMAP Conference at Jeju Island Korea during 19 -22 November 2001.
Dr. P. B. Parikh, Fastech Telecommunications (India) Pvt. Ltd., reports that the CPMT India Chapter organized three technical lectures between January 2001 and June 2001 all at Bombay. They also organized a 3-day technical convention at Mysore from 19 - 21 July 2001, which was jointly sponsored by the SMTA - India Chapter. The lectures were attended by 148 people. The conference was attended by 60 delegates. The CPMT India Chapter has concentrated on a membership drive and is taking every opportunity to promote IEEE-CPMT membership through special advertisements in IEEE Section newsletters in India and personal contacts.
Dr. Ricky Lee, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, reports that the Hong Kong Chapter of IEEE-CPMT organized a one-day short course under the CPMT Distinguished Lecturer Program on 20 August 2001, at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr. John Lau of Agilent Technologies was invited to teach subjects on Microvias and Wafer Level Chip Scale Packaging for High Density Interconnects. Forty-seven people from local industries and universities attended this short course. The response from attendees was overwhelming.
Prof. Johan Liu, Chalmers
University of Technology, reports that the workshop series
in microelectronics packaging in Sweden has now reached its second
year. This year the seminar started with Dr
Yi Fan Guo, Cidra, and Professor Jiamin Qu, Georgia Tech,
USA giving a one and half day workshop on "Testing and Characterization
tools and methodologies for electronics packaging" and "Fundamentals
of reliability of electronics packaging between 20 -21 August.
The workshop has been jointly
sponsored by IEEE CPMT Sweden Chapter, the National Swedish Graduate
School in electronics production, Eurotraining, Chalmers University
of Technology and TeknikCentrum. Future workshop plans can be
seen on: http://www.ieee.se/Chapters/CPMT_Chapter/cpmt_chapter.asp.
Steve Adamson, Asymtek, reports that the San Diego Chapter,
after a year of no activity has come back to life. In the San
Diego region a large percentage of the 60 CPMT members are also
members of other societies such as the International Microelectronics
Packaging Society (IMAPS) and the American Ceramic Society. IMAPS
and ACER's had formed an organization called the Joint Chapters
a number of years ago, to hold technical meetings and promote
activities in the San Diego region, for their members. Earlier
this year the San Diego CPMT chapter became a member of the Joint
Chapters organization and we have been active in planning the
technical meetings.
So far this year the San Diego Chapter has held the following
meetings:
Jan 23rd Thermal Management, 3M
Feb (CPMT only)BOG meeting, Integrated Passives, Len Schaper,
U of Arkansas
Mar 6th MEMS Reliability, Dr Reza Ghaffarian, JPL
Apr 10th Joint Meeting with Student chapter at UCSD, Telecom
May 29th Thermal/Power design, James Kaskade, INCEP
Jun 26th Venture Capitol in Telcom, Nasser Partoni, Enterprise
Partners
Jul 24th Ink Jet Fabrication, Jim Borquez, HP retired
Planned
Aug 28th Cell Phone Reliability, Tom Gregorich, Qualcomm
Sep 25th RF Packaging, Hassan Hashemi, Conextant
Oct 23rd Internet com via laser, Scott Bloom, AirFiber
Nov 27 Automotive Packaging, Keith Easler, Kyocera
The San Diego Chapter has a good meeting place and a critical
mass to attract some very good speakers. They need to increase
CPMT participation at these meetings. This is a call to all SD
members of CPMT, mark your calendar to attend the meetings.
If you have ideas for speakers or would like to help the CPMT
in SD then call Steve Adamson at (760)939-7274 or email to s.j.adamson@ieee.org.
