TC-12 Meeting Report

The tradition at TC-12 is to have the committee meting once a year in
conjunction with its premier conference - The Topical Meeting on
Electrical Performance of Electronic Packaging (EPEP). This year was no
exception when the meeting was held on Oct 20 at the Hyatt in Monterey,
California, a day before EPEP '02.

This year the meeting had a record attendance with over 40 attendees of
which only 20 were committee mmebers. This was largely due to the keynote
speaker Dr. G. Arjavalingam (Ari), Vice President of Business Development
at Kuokua networks. His stimulating talk on the Business aspects of the
Semiconductor Industry was very well received. Ari used to be a
technologist at IBM Research, prior to changing fields to the business
side. He is one of the founders of EPEP. Hence, his presence at the TC-12
meeting gave everyone an opportunity to meet with him after a number of
years.

Ari's talk was followed by three presentations on the status of the
workshops sponsored by TC-12. The first presentation was given by Prof.
Flavio Canavero from Univ. of Torino, Italy who presented on the Signal
Propagation of Interconnects (SPI) workshop. SPI '03 will be held in
Sienna, Italy, a very popular area for wine lovers. The attendance for
this workshop is expected to be around 100.

The second presentation was by
Prof. Joungho Kim from KAIST, S. Korea on Electrical Design of Advanced
Packaging (EDAPS) workshop. The first EDAPS workshop will be held in
Singapore on Dec 9, 2002, a day before the Electronic Packaging and
Technology Conference (EPTC). A total of 10 invited talks and a panel
session on System Integration Issues is planned for the workshop. This is
the first Asian workshop on Signal Integrity and is expected to draw an
audience of 70. The chair for the workhop is Dr. Mahadevan Iyear from IME,
Singapore.

The third and final presentation was given by Prof. Michel
Nakhla from Carleton University, Canada on EPEP. This year EPEP had more
than 200 attendees. Next year, EPEP will be held in Princeton, New Jersey.

Over the last few years, TC-12 has successfully sponsored five major
worksops and conferences focused on Electrical Design and Signal Integrity
namely, EPEP, SPI, EDAPS, FDIP and ISQED. TC-12 has also maintained a web
page (www.cpmt.org-technical committee-tc-12) that is constantly updated.
The most recent update has been the FDIP '02 presentations given by the
invited speakers at the workshop. This was possible due to Jaya
Bandhyopadyay of Juniper Networks, who has been a superb webmaster for
TC-12.
The activities of TC-12 far exceeds the activities of any other TC within
the CPMT society. For this, we thank the support of our active committee
members.
