CPMT Award Luncheon

Your society hosted the Thursday (June 3) luncheon at this year's eCTC. Competing with the munching sounds of 1000 engineers, President Phil Garrou stressed that members should not leave either their careers or their Society to chance. Attending ECTC is a positive step in career investment. CPMT is also forging a future by taking three recent steps:
1. Our globalization is now well established with the Board of Governors being represented closely with our world wide member education.
2. We have vastly expanded and updated our Internet presence so it is easier for our members to navigate and reap benefits.
3. We have formed a partnership with NEMI to form synergy in our efforts of tackling the problems facing industry.

Next W. Cleon Andersen, the 2004 IEEE President-Elect, then presented the IEEE Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Techology Field Award won by John W (Jack) Balde in June 2003. Prof. Leonard Schaper and Jack's daughter were there to accept this award (see article elsewhere in this newsletter). Picture of Cleon Andersen giving Len Schaper the Award

The annual CPMT awards were also presented at the luncheon:

David Feldman Outstanding Contribution Award was received by Ralph W. Wyndrum, Jr (Wyndrum Associates) for exceptional service to IEEE and the CPMT Society in various leadership roles for over 45 years.

Outstanding Sustained Technical Contribution Award went to Luu T. Nguyen (National Semiconductor Corp.) for major contributions to wafer level packaging and lead-free packaging, and for research collaboration and technology transfer in the area of electronic packaging.

Exceptional Technical Achievement Award was earned by Johan Liu (Chalmers University of Technology) for major research contributions in the area of conductive adhesives for electronic interconnect applications for a wide variety of industrial and consumer products.

Outstanding Young Engineer Awards (three this year)
Daoqiang Lu (Intel Corporation) for outstanding contributions to electrically conductive adhesives and advanced interconnect technologies and for supporting CPMT Society activities.
Shijian Luo (Micron Technology, Inc.) for outstanding contributions to underfills for flip chip packaging, and materials and processes for wafer level packaging and for supporting CPMT Society activities.
Lei L Mercado (Intel Corporation) for outstanding contributions to the development of industry standards for electronic package reliability assessment, RF MEMS designs and copper low-k packaging and for supporting CPMT Society activities.

Of the ten new IEEE Fellows within CPMT, 2 were able to receive their plaques at this luncheon: Rajen Chanchani of Sandia National Labs and Charles Ume of Georgia Tech.

In Addition, CPMT best paper awards were announced by Vice President of Publications Paul Wesling although many of the authors were not present to accept in person.
