Dr. Tadashi Fukao

Tadashi Fukao [F '94] received his B. Eng., M. Eng., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, in 1964, 1966, and 1969, respectively.

Since 1969 he has been working at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. From 1969 to 1977, he was a Research Associate; from 1977 to 1986, an Associate Professor; and since 1986, he has been a full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

His research interests include high-speed electrical machines, bearingless machines, static power converters, static VAR compensators, and variable ac drive systems. He was Vice-President of the Industry Applications Society of Japan from 1991 to 1992, and was its President from 1994 to 1995. He was an Editorial Director of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan from 1997 to 1998, and Vice-President of the IEE of Japan from 1998 to 1999. He also served as the Chairperson of the Japanese National Committee on IEC TC22 (Power Electronics) from 1990 to 1997.

He was a lecturer at the tutorial course sponsored by the Industrial Drives Committee of the IEEE Industry Applications Society, which was held at the 1992 and 1994 IAS Annual Meetings. He received Paper Awards in 1987 and 1998 from the IEE of Japan.
