Dr. Don Koval

Dr. Don O. Koval (S’60, M’65, SM’78, F’90) received his B.E. (in 1965), M.Sc. (in 1969), and Ph.D. degree (in 1978) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He worked for Saskatchewan Power Corporation in Regina from 1967-1969, and for British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority in Vancouver from 1965-1966. In 1980, Dr. Koval joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta as an Associate Professor, and in 1983 was promoted to Full Professor. He has presented and authored or co-authored over 275 technical papers in Europe, Asia, South America, and North America, in the fields of computer system reliability, UPS, power quality, and distribution system reliability engineering.

Dr. Koval is chairman of IEEE Std. 493 –1997, Recommended Practices for the Design of Reliable Industrial and Commercial Power Systems (i.e., IEEE Gold Book). He is a member of the IEEE Color Book Coordinating Committee, a member on several of the color book working groups, and Chairman of the Power System Reliability Subcommittee of the I&CPS Department of the IAS. Dr. Koval is a Life Fellow of the American Biographical Institute and the International Biographical Association, and a Lifetime Deputy Governor of the American Biographical Institute Research Association. He is a registered professional engineer in the Provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. He has been Conference Chair many times for IASTED's International Conferences on Applied Modeling and Simulation and High Tech Conferences on Power, and Conference Co-Chair of NAPS’87 and 1998 IEEE I&CPS Conference. He has been listed in many publications: Who's Who in the West; Who’s Who in America; Who’s Who in Science and Engineering; Personalities of the Americas; 5000 Personalities of the World; International Leaders in Achievement; The International Who's Who of Intellectuals; and Men of Achievement.

Dr. Koval recently was awarded The International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics’ Twentieth Century Achievement Award. This recognized his outstanding work, distinguished accomplishments, and dedicated, positive impact on the advancement of knowledge in the 20th Century. In 1999, he received an IEEE Award in recognition of outstanding contributions as a Student Branch Counselor for the 1998-99 academic year at the University of Alberta. At the IEEE PES 1999 summer power meeting, he received the IEEE PES and IAS Northern Canada Chapter Outstanding Achievement Award for outstanding leadership and technical contributions to the IEEE and members of the electrical industry in Canada.
