Surge Protection
Presenters: Lou Farquhar, VP - Engineering Services for Advanced Protection Technologies
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Lou Farquhar has a B.S. Electrical Engineering (summa cum laude) from Wright State University. He is a Professional Engineer, Certified Energy Manager and belongs to the Association Energy Engineers. He is also active participant in UL 1449 STP, IEEE 3.6 and NEMA 5VS surge suppression standards activities. Lou is currently Vice President of Engineering Services for Advanced Protection Technologies
ABOUT THE TOPIC
This presentation is intended for electrical engineering professional interested in AC surge protection. Transient overvoltages cause disruption and damage to sensitive microelectronic loads. We explain what surges are, where they come from and how to mitigate them. Performance characteristics of various suppression technologies and techniques are identified. Industry terminology is explained. Industry folklore is tackled with extensive emphasis placed on industry standards from IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, EPRI, IEC, etc. Importance of new UL 1449 safety and performance regulation is explained. 2008 & 2011 NEC changes regarding surge suppression are addressed. Major UL changes addressing safety and performance are emphasized. Key facility considerations are identified, leading to an outline of selection and installation choices.
