Wind-turbine Generator and
Application consideration
Presenter: Steve Moffitt,
General Electric Co
Present Position: Account Executive for GE Energy
Steve Moffitt is an Account Executive for GE Energy in the Chicago Area. In that role, he is the principle GE business representative to Invenergy LLC, a major player in the renewable energy and natural gas powered generation market. Together, GE and Invenergy have installed over one thousand large wind turbine generators in North America. In addition to his commercial responsibilities, Steve has been involved in new product customer evaluations, technical specifications, and engineering issues. Prior to GE, he was a power systems engineer and electrical utility executive. Stevešs initial power plant experience came in the US Navy with the commissioning and operation of an aircraft carrier in the 1970s. Steve is an electrical engineer and an IEEE Member.
About the topic:
In 2008, over 40 percent of all new electrical generation in the United States came from Wind Turbine Generators. Wind Energy has evolved to become a mainstream power source, with GE Energy becoming the largest supplier of wind generating equipment in the nation. The American Wind Energy Association estimates that wind energy could provide at least 20% of the nations electricity and provide 500,000 direct and indirect jobs by the year 2030. This presentation will cover an industry overview including policy and history. We will then explore wind energy fundamentals and discuss the general engineering aspects of a wind farm; starting with the turbine blades and ending with an entire wind farm behaving as a modern, grid friendly, power plant.
