GREEN UPS TECHNOLOGY Ð ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN THE DATA CENTER
Presenters: ALAN FRENCH Ð TECHNICAL RELATIONS MANAGER Ð EMERSON NETWORK POWER
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Alan French is the Manager of Technical Relations for the Liebert Power and Cooling Business of Emerson Network Power. He has been with Emerson 17 years and has more than 25 years of experience in power and controls. Alan works with key Consulting firms across the US on data center power architecture and design. He is a member of The Green Grid, working in the metrics and measurement group on power usage effectiveness, and was recently certified as a Data Center Energy Practitioner by the US Department of Energy. Alan holds a masterÕs degree in electrical engineering from Cleveland State University, a masterÕs degree in business administration from the Olin School of Business at Washington University, published numerous papers, and holds eight patents, and is an avid IEEE Member
ABOUT THE TOPIC
With a goal toward improved Efficiency without compromising Availability, data centers are taking a closer look at the use of alternative UPS and Battery topologies and Distribution voltages. UPS components and emerging AC voltage distribution schemes have resulted in higher density distribution and improved efficiencies. DC has re-emerged with a key advantage of being able to reduce the number of conversions required across the data center, yielding the potential for additional efficiency improvements. Renewable sources of energy and renewable technologies like flywheel technology are being applied more and more. This presentation will discuss system tradeoffs and how to apply emerging AC and DC power systems. Real world efficiency gains are the result Ð all while providing a high-availability architecture and scalability for future data center growth.
