Minutes of the Mining Industry Committee Meeting Seattle, Washington October 5, 2004 The MIC Meeting was held on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 in conjunction with the 2004 IEEE IAS Annual Meeting. In the absence of Mike Yenchek, Chairman of the Mining Industry Committee, Joe Sottile called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM. In the absence of Victor Kitts, Secretary of the Mining Industry Committee, Tom Novak served as recording secretary. The minutes of the 2003 MIC minutes were distributed and read. Tom Novak brought attention to item # 10, asking whether Jeff Kohler has accepted the position as the MIC liaison to the IEEE Standards Committee. Joe Sottile agreed to check with Jeff Kohler to determine if he has accepted this position. A motion was made by Tom Novak and seconded by Ken Sacks to approve the minutes. The motion passed unanimously. Joe Sottile discussed that the organizers of the International Symposium on Computer Applications in the Minerals Industry (APCOM) have expressed an interest in having their conference be done in cooperation with the IEEE IAS. Although many of their papers do not fall within the scope of the IAS, it was felt that this might still be an opportunity to attract new members to the MIC. Joe Sottile agreed to follow up with the organizers of APCOM regarding some form of involvement between APCOM and the IAS. A general discussion on membership followed, and it was agreed that the committee members will try to expand the membership through their contacts in Chile, Australia, and China. Eduardo Wiechmann commented that the number of MIC papers accepted for IAS Transactions seems low. Joe Sottile pointed out that, although the total number is relatively low, the percentage of accepted papers is relatively high, approximately 50% over the last two years. The low number of Transactions papers is due primarily to the relatively small number of papers presented at the Annual Meeting. In the paper review report, Joe Sottile indicated that of the seven papers submitted to the 2003 Annual Meeting, three were accepted, one was accepted with revisions, and three were rejected. No papers are currently in the review process. Joe Sottile reported that getting reviewers for power electronics papers is becoming difficult because the number of papers in this area is increasing and the Mining Industry Committee membership does not have much depth in this area for conducting the reviews. This issue was discussed, and it was decided to expand the number of reviewers, possibly by focusing on those people who attend the technical sessions. Joe Sottile reported that “Stereo Vision in LHD Automation”, by Mark Whitehorn, Tyrone Vincent, Christian Debrunner, and Johne Steele received the Second Place Award in the Society Transactions Prize Paper Awards at the Awards Luncheon on October 4, 2004. Fred Trutt agreed to maintain the Mining Industry Committee information on the IAS web site. Updates for the MIC web site can be sent directly to Fred for posting on the web site. Joe Sottile called for nominations for MIC officers. John Sammarco was nominated for Chairman by Fred Trutt and seconded by Tom Novak. Jorge Pontt was nominated for Vice Chairman by Tom Novak and seconded by Jose Rodriquez. Victor Kitts was nominated for Secretary by Tom Novak and seconded by Ken Sacks. A motion was made by Fred Trutt and seconded by Tom Novak to close the nominations. The motion to close nominations passed unanimously. An election ballot will be sent electronically to the committee membership by the committee secretary. Fred Trutt reported that the Call for Papers for the 2005 Annual meeting has been printed and that John Sammarco is listed as the Technical Committee Program Chair because he is the current Vice Chairman of the Mining Industry Committee. Therefore, John Sammarco will forward the necessary forms and paper submissions to Jorge Pontt. A motion was made by Tom Novak and seconded by Ken Sacks to adjourn the meeting. |
