Minutes of the Mining Industry Committee MeetingTampa, Florida
October 10, 2006
The MIC Meeting was held on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 in conjunction with the 2006 IEEE IAS Annual Meeting.
- In the absence of John Sammarco, Chair of the Mining Industry Committee, Jorge Pontt, MIC Vice Chair, called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM.
- In the absence of Victor Kitts, Secretary of the Mining Industry Committee, Joe Sottile served as recording secretary.
- Jorge Pontt reviewed the Meeting Agenda (Attachment 1).
- Summary of Technical Session 1: Five papers were scheduled for the “Safety and Productivity” Technical Session. All papers except for “Efficient Artificial Lighting System for Surface Mine Haul Roads” were presented. Because of the presentation-before-review policy of the IAS, this paper will not be reviewed for publication in Transactions on Industry Applications.
- Summary of Technical Session 2: Five papers were scheduled for the “High-Power Rectifiers and Drives ” Technical Session. All scheduled papers were presented and will be reviewed for publication in Transactions on Industry Applications.
- Paper Review Report: Joe Sottile reported that six papers were accepted, four were rejected, and one was still in review from the 2005 IAS Annual Meeting.
- Subcommittee Vacancy: Jorge Pontt pointed out that there is currently a vacancy in the Liaison Representative to Standards Coordinating Committee. The floor was opened for nominations to this position. Tom Barkand was nominated by Fred Trutt and seconded by Ken Sacks for this position. An election ballot will be sent electronically to the committee membership by the committee secretary.
- Nominations: The following nominations were made for the 2007-2008 term:
Chairperson: Jorge Pontt (motion by Fred Trutt, second by Noel D’Sa)
Vice Chairperson: Eduardo Wiechmann (motion by Tom Novak, second by Ken Sacks), Galina Mirzaeva (motion by Fred Trutt, second by Tom Barkand)
Secretary: Joe Sottile (motion by Tom Novak, second by Fred Trutt)
An election ballot will be sent electronically to the committee membership by the committee secretary.
- Discussion: Revitalizing the Mining Industry Committee. Jorge Pontt lead a discussion on revitalizing the Mining Industry Committee. It was pointed out that the quality of the MIC papers is good, demonstrated by the fact that two papers have been selected for IAS prizes over the last four or five years; however, participation in the technical sessions and in the committee should be increased. An ad hoc committee on membership was formed by Jorge Pontt, co-chaired by Galina Mirzaeva and Eduardo Wiechmann, with members to be determined by the co-chairs. The committee will focus on increasing international membership in the Mining Industry Committee. Ken Sacks volunteered to provide a list of international mining researchers to the ad hoc committee. The committee will report on its findings at the next MIC meeting.
- A general Call for Papers for the 2007 IAS Annual Meeting is posted on the IAS website at http://www.ewh.ieee.org/soc/ias/2007callforpapers.htm. The meeting will be held from September 23-27 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, New Orleans, LA, and the deadline for abstracts is January 15, 2007. Jorge Pontt agreed to send a reminder about the Call for Papers to the Mining Industry Committee members.
- Old Business: Jorge Pontt reiterated that the Mining Industry Committee should maintain acceptance of only high quality papers for the next Annual Meeting and to strive for at least two technical sessions.
- New Business: none.
- A motion was made by Tom Novak and seconded by Fred Trutt to adjourn the meeting.

In session 23 there were 5 papers scheduled.
5. SUMMARY OF TECHNICAL SESSION 2: High-Power Rectifiers and Drives (Novak).
In session 33 there were 5 papers scheduled.
6. PAPER REVIEW SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATE – (Sottile) 7. SUBCOMITTEE VACANCY ( Liaison Representative to Standards Coordinating Committee) – (Pontt).
This position is available. Nominations are welcome.
8. Vice-chair nomination. (Pontt)
It is needed to do the Vice-chair nomination. Election Ballets will be sent later by the secretary to the MIC members.
9. DISCUSSION : Revitalizing the Mining Industry Committee. – (Pontt)
Mining Industry is very dynamical. More young people are needed with technical abilities and personal competences. Interdisciplinary work is essential for productivity. Safety issues are becoming more important with the size and scaling-up of equipment..
