We are entering a new wave of circuits and systems inspired by biology, healthcare and life style. The CAS community has shown its excellence in the fields of bioinspired silicon with a leadership in neural networks, image processing and speech recognition to areas of silicon replacing biology with applications such as silicon cochlear, retina and neural prosthetics. We feel that the CAS community has the basic ingredients and critical mass to broaden its bio-scope to capture areas in both life sciences, physical sciences and engineering with application to medical problems. It is timely to create a BioCAS Technical Committee which covers areas of circuits and systems applied to:

·         Biotechnology - protiometics, genomics, drug delivery, tissue engineering;

·         Medical imaging - MNR, NMR, medical image processing and new hardware imaging modalities;

·         Bionics - artificial cochlear, retina, medical monitoring, telemetry, biosensors, sensor interfacing;

·         Biomechanics - robotics, image guided surgery, prosthetics;

·         BioMEMS - cardiology, fluid biomechanics;

Never before has the merger between engineering and medicine been so strong and the CAS Society believes it can make a major contribution to the interdisciplinary glue bonding the two disciplines.

The aim will be to have membership from all major international bioengineering institutions and to cover the areas of biotechnology, bionics, imaging and biomechanics. It is hoped that the Committee will have medical practitioners as well as biochemists and radiographers as members of the Committee from major hospitals such as USC, Johns Hopkins, Emery, Imperial, etc.
