The IEEE P1451.4 standard makes analog sensors plug and play. Officially named "IEEE P1451.4 Mixed Mode Interface for Smart Transducers," it defines an easy add-on approach that brings TEDS benefits to all types of analog sensors. An IEEE P1451.4 smart TEDS sensor consists of the analog components and an embedded EEPROM memory chip, which together provide the mixed mode interface for analog and digital signals. A smart TEDS sensor identifies and describes itself by providing the manufacturer, sensor model number, serial number, measurement range, sensitivity, and calibration information and by enabling users to automatically configure their data acquisition systems when they connect their sensors. National Instruments and leading sensor vendors have collaborated to provide Virtual TEDS, which allows users to download FREE to their local PC or server, a TEDS (Transducer Electronic Data Sheet) binary file via the internet.
