CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR NPSS AWARDS

The Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society gives three different categories of awards each year. Some awards are given by the Society and others are given by the Technical Committees. In addition to Society and Technical Committee Awards, NPSS Sponsored Conferences that have Short Courses will be soliciting nominations this year for Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grants. These grants are intended either for tuition in NPSS Sponsored Short Courses, or for partial or total travel expenses to attend NPSS Short Courses. These grants are available for outstanding Student Members of NPSS and unemployed members of NPSS who need assistance in changing career directions.

The deadline for the NPSS award nominations is January 31 of each year. All nomination forms and supporting materials must be received by the deadline to be considered.  Technical Committee Awards have variable deadlines, so refer to each award description.

Information about the NPSS awards and grants can be found in the IEEE/TAB Award Manual, which can be downloaded in PDF format from the TAB Awards Manual (PDF). Nomination forms for the Society Awards may be obtained below or from:

Below is the IEEE NPSS Award Process:

    1. Awards applications received.
    2. Packages duplicated and mailed to members of award committee.
    3. Rankings received back from the committee and a spreadsheet is prepared.
    4. Awardees decided upon by mutual discussions in the committee.
    5. Both nominators and successful nominees are notified of the decisions of the committee. Only the nominator is informed in the case of an unsuccessful nominee.
    6. Awardees names submitted to IEEE. Liz Parascondola prepares certificates and plaques. Rosanne Loyal prepares checks.
    7. Proposed citations on plaques and certificates checked for accuracy.
    8. Certificates and Plaques are prepared.
    9. IEEE sends out Income Tax Forms to awardees. Check cannot be sent out until signed Income Tax Form is returned by the awardee.
    10. Certificates, plaques and checks are mailed to the awardees directly to avoid possible loss. If a presentation is desired at a given meeting, the nominator or the awardee is responsible.
    11. Names, biographies, citations and photos of the awardees are to be submitted to the NPSS newsletter by the awardees. Send the material to amlarsen@slac.stanford.edu.
