Awards
IEEE Awards
These are high level Awards that are administered by IEEE and open to all IEEE members. While there are many IEEE-level Awards, there are a few that are particularly relevant to the technical fields of most NPSS members. Their nomination deadlines, forms, and submission instructions depend on the Award. Links to information on these Awards are given below.
- IEEE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Technical Field Award
Descriptive Flier (pdf)
- IEEE Medal for Healthcare Innovations and Technology
Descriptive Flier (pdf)
NPSS Awards
These four NPSS awards can be given to applicants who are in any of the technical fields of the NPSS. The deadline for receiving nominations for any of these Awards is January 31 of each year. All nomination forms and supporting materials must be received by this deadline to be considered.
- NPSS Early Achievement Award
Form (pdf) (doc)
- NPSS Graduate Scholarship Award
Form (pdf) (doc)
- NPSS Merit Award
Form (pdf) (doc)
- NPSS Richard F. Shea Distinguished Member Award
Form (pdf) (doc)
The NPSS Awards should be submitted electronically [Submit an Award Nomination].
Technical Committee Awards
Technical Committee Awards are generally given only to people who work in that specific technical field. These Awards are administered by the individual Technical Committees, and so their nomination deadlines, forms, and submission instructions depend on the Award. Links to information on these Awards are given below. A Summary of all awards can be downloaded.
- Computer Applications in Nuclear & Plasma Sciences Award (CANPS)
- Fusion Technology Award (FTC)
- Edward J. Hoffman Medical Imaging Scientist Award (MIC)
- Bruce H. Hasegawa Young Investigator Medical Imaging Award (MIC)
- Erwin Marx Award (PPST)
- Arthur H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award (PPST)
- Peter Haas Pulsed Power Award (PPST)
- Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Award (PAST)
- Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Doctoral Student Award (PAST)
- Plasma Science and Applications Award (PSAC)
- Plasma Science Igor Alexeff Outstanding Student in Plasma Science Award (PSAC)
- Radiation Effects Award (REC)

Conference Awards
Most NPSS conference present an Award for the Outstanding Student Paper presented at that conference. For information on the submission instructions, forms, and application deadlines for these Awards, please contact the General Chairman of the relevant Conference.
In addition, NPSS-sponsored Conferences that have Short Courses solicit nominations for Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grants. These grants are intended either for tuition in NPSS Sponsored Short Courses or for partial or total travel expenses to attend NPSS Short Courses. These grants are available for outstanding Student Members of NPSS and unemployed members of NPSS who need assistance in changing career directions. Application forms can be obtained below, and information on the submission instructions and application deadlines should be obtained from the General Chairman of the relevant Conference.
The Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference offers Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grants to promote graduate-level study and research on radiation instrumentation. Jordanov Travel Grant awardees will be reimbursed for expenses associated with traveling to and participating in the NSS/MIC. Information on the submission instructions and application deadlines should be obtained from the NSS/MIC Conference web site.
Below is a brief description of the IEEE NPSS Award Process:
- Awards applications received.
- Packages duplicated and mailed to members of award committee.
- Rankings received back from the committee and a spreadsheet is prepared.
- Awardees selected by the Awards Committee.
- Both nominators and successful nominees are notified of the decisions of the committee. Only the nominator is informed in the case of an unsuccessful nominee.
- Awardees names submitted to IEEE. Liz Parascondola prepares certificates and plaques. Rosanne Loyal prepares checks.
- Proposed citations on plaques and certificates checked for accuracy.
- Certificates and Plaques are prepared.
- IEEE sends out Income Tax Forms to awardees. Check cannot be sent out until signed Income Tax Form is returned by the awardee.
- Certificates, plaques and checks are mailed to the awardees directly to avoid possible loss. If a presentation is desired at a given meeting, the nominator or the awardee is responsible.
- Names, biographies, citations and photos of the awardees are to be submitted to the NPSS newsletter by the awardees. Send the material to amlarsen@slac.stanford.edu.
Call for Nominations for NPSS Awards
The Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society gives three different categories of awards each year. Some Awards are given by the Society, some by a Technical Committee, and some by individual Conferences. In addition, there are several IEEE-level Awards for technical achievement in areas that overlap with the NPSS. Descriptions of all Awards given by all parts of the NPSS can be found in Summary of All Awards (pdf). Descriptions of all Awards given by IEEE can be found in the IEEE/TAB Awards Manual (pdf). We have also provided a document that providesTips for Writing a Successful NPSS Award Nomination (pdf). Nomination forms for the Society Awards may be obtained from this page, or from:
