2010 Conference Trainee Grants

Nomination Deadline: June 15, 2010
Description: There will be a limited number of grants for support of trainees (graduate students and post-doctoral fellows) to attend the conference.
Prize: The grants will be in the form of direct payments by the conference toward the conference registration, workshop, and short course fees. There will be no support for travel or hotels. The exact number of grants and the dollar amounts are still being determined.
Funding: Funded by the conference for up to $500 each.
Eligibility: If you apply for a grant, DO NOT register for the conference until you know the status of your application. The technical program committees will recommend candidates to the general chair for final selection. Applicants will be notified in July. Grants will be made according to the following criteria until all available funds are committed:
- First priority to students/postdocs who are first authors of accepted abstracts
- Second priority to students/postdocs who are co-authors on accepted abstracts
- Within any category, funds will be distributed according to the date the letter of recommendation is received

The support for these grants comes from different sources. Some grants may have restrictions, e.g., limited to IEEE members.

Grant recipients will be expected to write a letter of thanks to the company which provided the funds for their trainee grant.
Basis for Judging: Applicants need to have their mentor(s) to complete online letters of recommendation by June 15, 2010.

Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant

Nomination Deadline: June 15, 2010
Description: The purpose of the Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant Fund (Jordanov Travel Grant) is to promote graduate-level study and research on radiation instrumentation and to promote membership in the IEEE.
Prize: Jordanov Travel Grant awardees will be reimbursed for expenses associated with traveling to and participating in the NSS, up to a maximum of USD 600 (if the awardee resides in the same continent that the conference is being held in) or up to a maximum of USD 1,200 (if the awardee resides in a different continent than the conference is being held in).
Funding: Funded by the conference.
Eligibility: Recipients must be graduate students or individuals who have obtained their highest degree less than five years prior to the start of the IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium (NSS). Preference will be given to applicants in the field of Nuclear Electronics and applicants from Bulgaria. Candidates should show exceptional promise in the field of Radiation Instrumentation.
Basis for Judging: Candidates should apply through the Trainee Grant Application process. Academic Advisors/Supervisors will be asked to submit a letter of recommendation. Recommendations should address financial need, demonstrated technical merit, career intentions and worthiness of the candidate.

The 2010 Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grant

Prize: Maximum of $500 for each NSS recipient and $500 for each MIC recipient, mostly for tuition in NPSS Sponsored Short Courses, but in selected cases, possibly for partial hotel room costs to attend the NSS or MIC Short Course. The grants will be in the form of direct payments by the conference toward Short Course tuition and/or partial hotel room costs. There will be no support for travel. This year, we expect to make a minimum of two NSS Phelps grants for NSS and two MIC Phelps grants for MIC.
Funding: Funded by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society.
Eligibility: Outstanding NPSS Student Members, Postdoctoral Fellows who are Members of NPSS, and unemployed Members of NPSS who need assistance in changing career direction. An NPSS member that is interested in being considered for a grant should send a letter of nomination to the respective NSS or MIC program chair. If the candidate is a student or post doc, the letter should be co-signed by the candidate's mentor. The letter should contain the following information:

NPSS Student/Post Doc Members:

  • your name and contact information
  • if a Student, the name of your school, and the degree program you are enrolled in (both the subject and the degree being sought), and, if appropriate, a brief biographical sketch
