PARTICLE ACCELERATOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

The Particle Accelerator Science and Technology (PAST) committee is one of the technical committees of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society.

Particle Accelerator Conference

PAST co-sponsors the Particle Accelerator Conference along with the APS Division of Physics of Beams.

The Particle Accelerator Conference has been held biannually since 1965. It is the principal conference in the United States devoted broadly to the Science and Technology of Particle Accelerators. The conference was created under the auspices of the IEEE. The PAST committee of NPSS continues that tradition in cooperation with the Division of Physics of Beams of the American Physical Society.  The Particle Accelerator Conference is governed by an Organizing Committee. The Bylaws of the North American PAC are available in this link as a pdf file.

PAC07, the 22nd Particle Accelerator Conference, was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, June 25-29, 2007. Los Alamos National Laboratory hosted the conference with Stan Schriber as Conference Chair and Bob Garnett as Scientific Program Chair.

PAC’09 will take place 4-8 May 2009 in Vancouver, B.C. at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, the same conference hotel as PAC 85 & PAC 97. The Conference Chair is Paul Schmor. The Program Chair is Shane Koscielniak.

PAC’11 will take place in New York City at March 28 to April 1, 2011 in New York City’s Marriott Marquis on 46th Street and Broadway, which was the site of PAC’99. The Conference Chair is Bill Weng.

Proceedings of recent PAC conferences are available via IEEE Xplore (search for Particle Accelerator Conference) or the JACoW Website.

Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Technical Committee Membership and Activities

Members of the Committee are the PAST TC Chair who is appointed by the IEEE NPSS President, the past TC Chair, elected PAST NPSS AdCom members at large, the chair of the last PAC and the chair of the upcoming PAC.

The Bylaws of the NPSS PAST TC are available in this link as a pdf file.

The current membership is:

Ilan Ben-Zvi, chair for a term beginning January 2005.

Bruce Brown, former chair.

Sandra Biedron, elected member.

Paul Schmor, PAC’09 chair.

Stan Schriber, PAC’07 chair.

In addition to the Particle Accelerator Conference, the PAST committee will leverage the NPSS and IEEE resources to promote accelerator science and technology. IEEE member recruitment and advancement (IEEE Senior Member and IEEE Fellow Nomination) are supported. Please contact the PAST chair with your comments, proposals and suggestions.

PAST Award

The IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society awarded the 2007 Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Award to:

Satoshi Ozaki and Michael Harrison, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton NY USA "For leadership in the successful design and construction of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider"

    and to:

Victor Malka, Laboratoire d’optique appliquée, Palaiseau, France, "For groundbreaking work on laser-plasma accelerators"

Further details can be found at Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Award (PAST Award).

JACoW and Conferences

The Joint Accelerator Conferences Website is maintained to provide online access to the proceedings from several accelerator-related JACoW Collaboration Conferences. The collaborating conferences now include: APAC, EPAC, PAC, COOL, CYCLOTRONS, DIPAC, FEL, ICALEPCS, ICAP, ICFA Advanced Beam Dynamics Workshops, LINAC, RUPAC. Please see the JACoW link for access to the proceedings.

Accelerator Training

Academic Training in the field of accelerators and beams is provided in both special settings like USPAS and in traditional academic departments. The USPAS provided links for many other programs: USPAS

Membership

I would urge you to consider IEEE membership in order that you might lend your support to the orderly management of our conferences and publications, the growth of local, national and international professional ties, systematic efforts toward professional recognition with awards, prizes, and advanced membership grades, and, through IEEE USA, advocacy for support of science.

You may become an NPSS Affiliate Member if your professional interests are in the fields covered by NPSS, but you do not desire the additional benefits derived from belonging to the parent IEEE Organization. You will be entitled to all the benefits of NPSS but not of IEEE. Further information can be found on the NPSS Membership link.

Useful Links

ICFA the International Committee for Future Accelerators sponsors a number of activities of interest to the accelerator community. Some workshop links are shown above. In addition, there are several ICFA Panels on specialized accelerator topics:
