An IEEE society dedicated to understanding and promoting effective communication in engineering, scientific, and other technical environments

2009 IPCC in Hawaii

2009 IPCCMake plans to join us in beautiful Hawaii for the 2009 International Professional Communication Conference. Set to run from July 19-22 at the Hilton Hawaii Village in Honolulu, the conference's focus is on po'okela, or the commitment to excellence, in the communication of technical information. How can we best define, measure, and achieve that excellence?

The conference call for papers is available as a .pdf attachment below. Coming soon you'll be able to submit your proposals online right here. In the meantime, take a look at just a few of the suggested topic areas:

How Threat Affects Knowledge--An Experimental Study

5:07 minutes (3.52 MB)

Listen as Ned Kock, co-author of "An Experimental Study of Simulated Web-based Threats and Their Impact on Knowledge Communication Effectiveness," offers interesting insights into study results, reported in the June, 2008 issue of the Transactions on Professional Communication, that show how threat, or the possibility of it, heightens our awareness enough that we may be better learners when it is more imminent.

Tackling Typical Grammar Problems

8:09 minutes (7.47 MB)

This training podcast provides examples as well as explanations and tips for dealing with a few grammar or usage problems that occur for many engineering and technical professionals who have to communicate in a hurry, via, for example, email. Listen for ways to know when to use can or may, affect or effect, it's or its, and also me, myself, or I.
