Every group or organization, whether it's made up of volunteers or paid employees, exists for a reason. If the members of your organization know its goals and purposes, they're much more likely to be successful. A strategic plan can help.
For the past several years I've led the strategic planning activity for the Society for Technical Communication (STC). STC has a small staff of paid employees, but a great deal of the work is done by volunteers both at the society level and in local chapters and special interest groups (SIGs).

Proposals

As I write this, over 120 proposals for papers, posters, workshops, tutorials, and media showcases have been submitted. Dozens of reviewers are about to start  reviewing the proposals, and selecting the ones that will be accepted for the conference.

 

Conference Format

Unlike previous conferences, we will offer a full three-day program in 2010, and not end at lunch time on the third day. Each day will offer a plenary lecture by one of our keynote speakers (to be announced soon), and a large number of sessions.

Parma and Project Management

So, here I am in Parma, Italy, at the Academia Barilla cooking school through Sur La Table —two organizations that really understand the community around cooking and the foodies like me who want to experience culture through cooking.
