Meeting, Saturday, December 2, Tour of Alcoa
Aluminum Three Oaks Mine |
We will meet at the Three Oaks mine parking lot
entrance at 8:30 AM East of Elgin TX before the tour
and eat lunch at Meyer’s
Elgin SmokeHouse after the tour. Mike drove out
to the mine and provides these directions.
- From Austin; take 290 east. Go through
Elgin.
- Turn left (north) on FM 696. Landmarks are Gas
station and Acme Brick.
- Travel on FM 696 about 3.5 miles.
- Turn left on FM 619.
- Travel 0.5 mile on FM 619. There is a sign for
the Alcoa, 3 Oaks Mine Office. Turn right.
The Three Oaks Mine is
part of the Alcoa Aluminum Rock dale operation. Alcoa
operates the largest aluminum smelter in the U.S.,
an eight pot-line facility combined with coal mines
and power plant. Located 60 miles from Austin in central
Texas, the 30,000-acre Rock dale site includes the
Three Oaks Mine. Reservations

A big thank you to Michael McCluskey,
P.E., of Austin Energy, who led our discussion October
24 on the problems associated with recovery
of the Texas power grid after a system failure. We
appreciate his insight into this difficult problem.
Mike was kind enough to provide us with a copy of his

Roy Matthews (left) receives an IEEE Appreciation
Award on May 23, from Vice Chapter Chair Mike Noth,
for service as Central Texas Power Society Chapter
Chair for 2005-2006. We all appreciate Roy's hard work
and dedication coordinating the PES Chapter's successful
activities.
