September, Plant Tour, Tuesday, September 25, STATCOM - Arastou Oskoui, Austin Energy

STATCOM stands for Static Synchronous Compensator. It is a generator that provides controlled reactive power at the point of common coupling without the need of large external reactors or capacitor banks. At our next meeting, a tour, Arastou Oskoui, Austin Energy, will help us understand the technology and how it is used in Austin Energy power generation to lower power production costs.

We will meet 6 PM at the Austin Energy Holly Street Power Plant at 2401 Holly Street on the north side of Lady Bird Lake (Town Lake) east of I-35. If you plan to attend, you must complete the waiver form and fax or email it to Toye Collins, Fax:: 512-972-9534, eMail: , by Tuesday, September 18 so your background check may be completed in time for the tour. Please see the announcement for clothing requirements and other details

Committee Members Needed

IEEE PES has established an engineer of the year program that will us to recognize the outstanding contributions of one of our chapter members each year to power engineering and PES. The peer recognition of the winner will be embellished by an IEEE PES Plaque documenting the award. Details are provided in a PowerPoint presentation. In order to participate we need a selection committee of three to:

  • Determine the criteria our chapter's award
  • Develop forms and procedures
  • Evaluate submissions

If you would like to help your colleagues obtain this prestigious award and at the same time gain leadership experience by participating on this committee, please send Mike Noth an email at

Our thanks to The Folks at Graybar

We appreciate the invitation to participate in the seminars of the Greater Austin Graybar Technology Showcase 2007 hosted by Graybar and a long list of suppliers. We also appreciated in the invitation to participate in an evening of Baseball between Round Rock Express and the Albuquerque Isotopes at the Dell Diamond. It was well worth our time and energy. We particularly appreciate Wayne Hachenberg's help in working out the details. Wayne thinks that the event may be scheduled for next year and to make it even better, he has asked for our suggestions for improvement. Comments may be emailed to Mike Noth, Stan Friend, or telephoned directly to Wayne at 426-4561.

Analog Newsletter

Some attendees of our meetings have not been receiving their electronic copy of the IEEE Central Texas Section Newsletter, The Analog. If you are an IEEE member, your subscription is automatic to your profile on record at IEEE. IF you are not a member, you may subscribe. Details are provided at the Analog Webpage.

Be advised that there is not a lot of traffic on this list intentionally.  The list manager tries to keep it below 3 emails a month - The Analog, the mid-month reminder, and maybe an emergency announcement, but we prefer 2 emails a month.
