Presentation:

Partial Discharge. Formal title: Medium Voltage Switchgear: Failure Modes, Case Studies, and Predictive Opportunities via the Use of Partial Discharge Monitoring. Electrical preventative and predictive maintenance are important aspects in assuring the reliability and integrity of electrical distribution systems. However, one of the most overlooked maintenance items in operating facilities today is the medium voltage switchgear. Typically maintenance is focused on the breaker compartments, the cable compartments, the circuit breakers and the protective relays. By far the most under-maintained component in plant electrical distribution systems is the main bus insulation system of medium voltage switchgear. This presentation will review the current IEEE available failure data related to MV equipment and case studies of failure modes as well as preventive measures by the use of partial discharge technology and monitoring. Example of applying partial discharge technology to MV motors and generators will also be presented.
