February 2005 Luncheon Meeting

Date: Thursday, February 17, 2005

Speaker: Tom Glock, Manager Power Operations
  Arizona Public Service Co.

Topic: "Surviving the Summer of 2004"

Abstract:

This lunch meeting was the best attended meeting we have had in recent memory. Fifty three people were in attendance (not including the speaker) to hear Tom Glock discuss the unique challenges that were faced during the summer of 2004 and how the utilities were able to cope with the challenges. Tom discussed the June 14, 2004 fault event and how it impacted the July 4th Westwing transformer fire event. He also discussed the Deer Valley transformer fire and Yuma gas turbine GSU transformer fire and how these different outages affected the Phoenix area import capability. Operators were able to keep from shedding load during the summer through innovative islanding schemes (8 different schemes used through the summer) combined with customer voluntary load curtailment. A interesting array of questions were answered following the presentation.
