January 2009 Luncheon Meeting

Date: Thursday, January 15, 2009

Location: SRP PERA Club (map)
  1 E. Continental Dr.
  Tempe, AZ

Speakers: Chico Hunter, Senior Engineer, Sustainability Initiatives and Technologies group, Salt River Project
Tony Tewelis, Program Manager, Renewable Energy Incentive Program, Arizona Public Service Company

Topic: SRP and APS Renewable Energy Programs

Summaries:

Mr. Hunter spoke about SRP’s Sustainable Portfolio program, which was put in place in 2004 to promote the development of both renewable energy resources and energy efficiency measures. The Sustainable Portfolio goal is to achieve 15% of SRP’s retail energy from sustainable resources by 2025. SRP has made good progress to date and currently has over 5% sustainable resources from a diverse mix of resources including wind, solar, hydro, landfill gas, geothermal and a variety of energy efficiency programs. An overview of the program and details on some of the renewable energy projects was be presented.

Mr. Tewelis discussed APS' Renewable Energy Incentive Program to help facilitate the installation of customer sited renewable energy technologies. To date, APS customers have received over $20,000,000 in renewable energy incentives. Over 2,300 participants have generated more than 6.4 megawatts of "green" electricity and have displaced more than 2,500,000 kWhs by installing solar water heaters alone. By 2025, APS is planning to have more than 15% of all of its retail sales be supplied by renewable energy resources.

60 persons attended the luncheon.

Biographies:

Chico Hunter currently works as a senior engineer in SRP’s Sustainability Initiatives and Technologies group and manages the SRP EarthWise Solar incentive program for commercial customers. He holds a Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering and a Master’s in manufacturing engineering, both from Arizona State University. Chico has worked at SRP since 2003 and has been involved in a variety of renewable energy projects including biomass, low-impact hydro, solar photovoltaic and solar water heating. Chico also participates in renewable energy policy analysis and has helped develop SRP’s solar incentive programs.

Tony Tewelis works as the Program Manager for APS's Renewable Energy Incentive Program. He is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of the corporation’s Renewable Energy Incentive Program (end-use applications derived from Solar, Wind, Biogas/Biomass, Geothermal, Hydro, and other renewable fuel sources). Prior to joining APS, Tewelis spent nearly twenty years in Wisconsin working in the utility industry. Most recently he served as the Director of Customer Relations and Interconnection Services for the American Transmission Company (ATC). Tewelis earned a bachelor’s degree of business administration at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh in 1988, a graduate certificate in project management in 1996, and a master’s of business administration in 1998, at the Keller Graduate School of Management.
