November 2009 Luncheon Meeting

Date: Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Location: APS Deer Valley Building N-1, Conference Room E (map)
  2124 W. Cheryl Dr.
  Phoenix, AZ

Speakers: Gregory Wojak M.S. and Gail Waytena Ph.D., MBA, Financial Advisors, LPL Financial

Topic: Building Better Investment Portfolios in Uncertain Times

Summary:

Recently, markets have been extremely volatile in response to the global financial crisis. The S&P 500 index has dropped to pre-2000 values, and some international markets have fared even worse. This has prompted some investors to question the validity of a long-term, diversified investment strategy. The presenters showed why these tenets are still valid, and how they apply to today’s market. They also examined the economic outlook for the next 3-5 years and took a look at the trends that are actively shaping the market. They discussed the potential effects of inflation, higher taxes, slower economic growth, and the weakening dollar on a portfolio and how to diversify some of the risks caused by these factors. 22 persons attended, including the two speakers.

Alternative strategies and mutual funds were also discussed. Alternative investments may not be suitable for all investors and should be considered as an investment for the risk capital portion of the investor’s portfolio. The strategies employed in the management of alternative investments may accelerate the velocity of potential losses.
