Abstract: Data Management in emerging networks such as mobile ad hoc networks and in Mobile P2P need dynamic data management due to fragile wireless connection and devices with very limited capacity. Also, traditional methods of data management in mobile environment generally consider only single hop client-server communication. On the other hand, in mobile ad hoc and mobile P2P computing, the network communication is multi-hop. Due to dynamic nature of moving hosts, topology changes very often and traditional data management schemes fall short in providing availability. Most mobile technologies physically support broadcast data management mechanism and a node can take advantage of push to disseminate information to all mobile clients in its cell. However, nodes have limited battery power which needs to be preserved. Furthermore, in mobile P2P, economic models may play a better role in inciting peers to collaborate. In this tutorial, I will discuss dynamic data management issues in a mobile ad hoc networks environment including Mobile P2P. I will provide insights into the tradeoffs inherent in data management algorithms in mobile ad hoc computing environment.

The tutorial will focus on the following topics:

Dynamic Data Management Issues in MANET Dynamic Replication and Caching in Mobile P2P Location Dependent Data Management in MANET Economic Models in Mobile P2P

Prospective Audience: This tutorial is designed for students, academicians and researchers working in the area of wireless data processing. It is to help computer and database professionals/business analysts, such as, system administrators, designers, project and technical managers, and for people involved in planning, designing, developing, implementing, administrating wireless applications. It is also for students of computer and information science who are pursuing or planning to pursue a graduate degree.
