Welcome to IEEE ECCE 2009 !
“Great job on a highly successful first year!”* “…the technical organization was so perfect.”* “Overall a very well organized and well balanced conference.”* The first year of a conference is always a test. Will the attendance meet expectations? Will papers presented represent the latest in technological advances and provide valuable information? Well, you can answer YES to all the above for ECCE 2009. 2009 marked the first annual IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Expo (ECCE) in San Jose, California, September 20th – 24th. Due to your active participation and enthusiasm, our first effort in combining the best of the IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference (PESC) and the Industrial Power Conversion Systems Departments technical sessions at the IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting was a huge success. ECCE 2009 saw more than 900 international attendees, representing over 40 countries, received over 1200 abstract submissions, out of which, 600 of the best were presented in 88 oral presentation sessions, and 16 poster presentation sessions, and our two day Expo featured 25 of the leading industry organizations. Plenary speakers, Martin Eberhard, Co-Founder of Tesla Motors, and Daniel Kammen, University of California, Berkeley provided inspiring and informative talks on practical ideas for the energy conversion industry. Rap sessions provided great discussion forums on hot topics in application and theory. Various tutorials provided attendees with the tools necessary to transfer latest research results into practical applications in the industry. Our technical program covered everything from transportation and industry applications, to issues, challenges, and successes in the energy conversion and renewable energy communities. Social functions, such as the Opening Reception, Awards Luncheon, and ECCE Banquet allowed for a welcome break and encouraged further networking among our attendees. The 2009 Expo was intimate and featured some of the most prominent industry leaders in components and software fields that support the energy conversion and alternative energy trade, both users and researchers alike. On behalf of the entire IEEE ECCE 2009 Organizing Committee, I would like to thank you for your participation, enthusiasm, feedback, and overall energy that helped to drive such a fantastic conference.
