ABSX: HI-PIM AI NPU on Advanced Packaging

Youngsu Kwon (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute)

Biography: Youngsu Kwon received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), Republic of Korea in 1997, 1999, and 2004, respectively. He joined MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)’s Microsystems Technology Laboratory (MTL) as a Postdoctoral Associate at 2004-2005 for research of 3D-integrated FPGA. He is now devoting to research and development of AI Processors in Artificial Intelligence Semiconductor National Laboratory(N-LAB) in Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, ETRI, Republic of Korea, since 2005. In ETRI, he has been leading the AB, Artificial Brain project, for 14 years, encompassing the design of AI Processor architecture, AI NN Compiler, and Heterogeneous Integration PIM AI Processor as a Principal Researcher in ETRI. He is also serving as a member of Review Board of Semiconductor Design in National Research Foundation of Korea. He has special skills and knowledges in AI processor design, low-power semiconductor architecture, compilers, computer-aided design, and algorithmic optimizations of circuits and systems. He received two Presidential Prize from Korean Government in 2021 for contributions to Korean semiconductor technology advancements, five Official Commendation Prizes from the Ministry of Science and ICT as well as Ministry of Industry in 2021, 2020 and 2016, the Presidential Award for Semiconductor Design in 2016, the Excellent Researcher Award from National Research Council of Science and Technology in 2021 and 2013, Industrial Contributor Award from Korean Federation of SMEs in 2013, and medals from Samsung’s Thesis Prizes in 2004 and 1999.
