Alan (Al) C. Rotz graduated from Lehigh University in 1970 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. In 2001 he completed a MS in Engineering Management from Drexel University. He has been a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania in the USA since 1976.
Al retired from PPL Electric Utilities in April 2010 after 40 years of service. He spent 17 years in the Transmission and Distribution Planning Departments, including 8 years as a Supervising Engineer. He then spent three years a Supervising Engineer in the Distribution Operations and Maintenance Department. His management assignments over the past 20 years have included Field Engineering and Construction, Substation Engineering, Distribution Engineering, and his most recent role as Manager of Attachment & Telecom Business Services. From 1995 to 2001 Al was a member of the Edison Electric Institute’s Transmission & Substation Committee, and served that group in roles as 2nd and 1st Vice Chair.
Al was a member of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Substation Committee from 1995-2001, where his major contributions were made as part of the Environmental Subcommittees. He was an active participant on Working Groups that affirmed or re-wrote IEEE Guides on Animal Deterrents (1264), Containment and Control of Oil Spills in Substations (980) and Substation Security (980). He also served as Vice Chair of the Environmental Subcommittee during those years. Al was elected as Treasurer of IEEE PES in 2004 and again in 2006. He was elected as PES President-Elect in 2008 and in that position also served as Chair of the PES Long-Range Planning Committee. He became the PES President in January 2010 and will serve through 2011, and then will become PES Immediate Past President for 2012-13. He is currently serving on the IEEE TAB PSPB Products and Services Committee, the IEEE TAB Ethics and Conflict Resolution Committee, and the TAB Future Directions Committee.
