About the Speaker

Boming Zhang is a professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He received M Eng. from Harbin Institute of Technology in 1982 and Ph.D. from Tsinghua University in 1985, both in Electrical Engineering. He has been serving for Tsinghua University since 1985. His research area includes power system analysis, computer application in power system control center, etc. He developed and implemented the first EMS advanced application software in China in 1990. The system-wide Automatic Voltage Control system he and his team developed has been applied to most of power grids in China. He is IEEE Fellow, CSEE Fellow and the member of IEEE PES Fellow Committee. He won IEEE PES/CSEE Yu-Hsiu Ku Electrical Engineering Award in 2015. He is a speaker of the IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer Program. He chaired a project of the National Key Basic Research Program of China, Energy Management and Operation Control for Smart Grid with Source-Grid-Demand Synergy. He has published more than 500 academic papers. He published a text book for graduate students, Advanced Electric Power Network Analysis, Cengage Learning Asia Pte Ltd.(Formerly Thomson Learning) , 2011.

About the Tutorial

Smart Grid Energy Management System(EMS) is a neural center for modern Electric Power Control Center(EPCC) which manages energy and controls power flow in a supply-grid-demand coordinated way so as to accommodate more renewables into the network. How to manage, dispatch and control power system in Smart Grid environment, a Smart Grid EMS should be developed. Distributed autonomy and centralized coordination will be the key feature of such a Smart Grid EMS.

Distributed autonomy means that many distributed μ-EMSs are built to control local objectives, such as substation, wind farm, EV charger, μ-network, etc, to make the objectives self-rule and grid friendly. Centralized coordination means that a higher level EMS in EPCC is built to coordinate and optimize μ-EMSs to achieve an overall benefit of security, economy and electrical quality. All these tasks will be implemented by coordination among the members of the family of Smart Grid EMS.

With such a structure of distributed autonomy and centralized coordination, Smart Grid EMS will coordinate source supply with load demand through grid, to get supply-grid-demand synergy, for accommodating more renewables into power grid.

This tutorial presentation will introduce basic concept of distributed autonomy and centralized coordination, EMS family and how to implement the autonomy and the coordination from the aspects of operation planning, schedule, dispatch and operation control. Some examples of practical implementation in China are given.
