The Evolution of a Transmission System
By Charlie Moser, Chief Engineer, Retired, at National Grid

NOTE THE ROOM AND BUILDING HAVE BEEN CHANGED FROM THE NORMAL VENUE. SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE.

If you are interested in joining the Boston PES Chapter or joining the IEEE, please come along and talk to some of the Committee members

In this talk, Mr Moser traces the evolution of the electrical transmission system from the very beginnings of electrical power delivery in the late 1870s to the 21st century. He outlines some of the technologies that drove the development of the power system; as well as those that at first limited, and later enabled, its growth; demolishing some widely held misconceptions along the way. The talk is centered around the network in south central New England, but the underlying principals are universal, and much the same story could be told about any power system anywhere.

Speaker's Bio:

Mr. Moser retired in November, 2004 as vice-president of National Grid USA Service Company and Chief Engineer, and is presently a consultant to National Grid USA.

He joined New England Electric System in 1962, and has had experience in distribution system design and planning, transmission electrical design and planning, and substation engineering.

Mr. Moser was named Manager of Electrical Stations Engineering in 1978, Chief Protection and Planning Engineer in 1984, Vice-President of Massachusetts Electric and Director of Retail Engineering in 1993, and Vice-President and Chief Engineer in 1998.

Mr. Moser holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; is a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; and is a Life Senior Member of IEEE. He is past Chairman of the Worcester Section of IEEE and the Worcester Chapter, IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES); and was a member of the IEEE Working Groups on Estimating the Lightning Performance of Transmission Lines and on Special Safety Aspects of HVDC Transmission. He was named Engineer of the Year by the Worcester Chapter IEEE PES in 2002, and was awarded an IEEE Region 1 award For Outstanding Career Achievements in Engineering Management in 2005.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC). He formerly chaired the NPCC Task Force on System Protection, was a member of NPCC's Compliance Monitoring and Assessment Subcommittee, and was National Grid USA's representative on the NPCC Reliability Coordinating Committee and NPCC Members Committee. He is a former member of the NEPOOL Stability Task Force and of the System Design Task Force; and chaired the Protective Relay and Control Subcommittee of the Joint ISONE/NEPOOL Y2K oversight committee. He was a member of the former Industrial Advisory Committee to the Department of Electrical Power Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The meeting will be held at Olin College in Needham, MA. The presentation will start at 6:30PM. A brief Boston Chapter PES Meeting will precede the presentation. For further information please call Bryan Gwyn on 781 907 3229 or email him at bryangwyn@ieee.org. Directions to Olin College: Take Route 95/128 to exit 19B (Highland Avenue, Needham).
