Speakers
Andrew R. Kaufman, MD, (SUNY Upstate Medical University),
"From Academia to Industry: the Story of an Entrepreneurial Psychiatrist"
Dr. Kaufman is an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
He will highlight the business case of Zinnia Safety Systems, LLC, a medical device start-up. Zinnia is
developing a suicide monitoring system for use in custodial care facilities, such as jails and psychiatric
hospitals. He will cover the technical challenges of product R&D for a non-engineer and discuss the
elevant technology, photoplethysmography (PPG).
and
Denis Cormier, PhD (RIT)
"3D Printing"
Denis Cormier is the Earl W. Brinkman Professor of Advanced Machine Tools at the Rochester Institute of
Technology (RIT). His teaching and research interests focus on additive and direct-write printing
technologies for synthesis of novel materials and geometric structures. 3D printing technologies
have received a great deal of attention in recent years. What few people realize is that the medical
community was responsible for driving much of the early innovations in this field. This talk will
highlight a number of interesting ways in which different 3D printing technologies have been used
in medicine.
