Report authored by: Prof Rajgopal Receiving Invitees at the lobby

IEEE Bangalore Section organized an International Conference on Communications Control and Signal Processing in the Next Millenium (CCSP 2000) from July 25-28, 2000 at Hotel Ashok, Bangalore.

The conference was inaugurated by Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. Prof. Goverdhan Mehta, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore presided over the Inaugural function. In the inaugural talk "Information Technology and its Many Dimensions", Dr. Abdul Kalam talked about the goal set by Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee to transform India into a knowledge society. Inaugural session He said that by exploiting the core competence in information technology, bio-technology, weather forecasting, telemedicine and tele-education with improved bandwidth for communication, we can achieve the goal of becoming a knowledge society by the year 2008. He narrated two examples in the area of telemedicine, live market quotes for rural areas, where good communication is highly beneficial for growth and prosperity. He exhorted the scientists to develop technology by which faster communication can be made available utilising all the available technologies like telephone, wireless, cable, fibre and satellite. Two Plenary talks were given by Prof. T. Kailath, Stanford University , ("Array Algorithms, Displacement Structure and Fast Modems") and Dr. Narain Hingorani ("Role of Power Electronics in Electric Power System") respectively which were well received by the participants. Section of the audience-2

The conference also organised three pre-conference tutorials - 1) An Overview of DSL Technologies by V U Reddy and M T Arvind, 2) Video Information Processing by Mohan Kankanhalli, and Space-Time Coding and Processing by Nambi Seshadri. The response to the tutorial was overwhelming.

The conference brought together the results of recent research in Communication, Control and Signal Processing in the form of 82 technical papers. These papers were presented in 18 sessions over three days, 4 Communication Sessions, 6 Signal Processing Sessions, 3 Computer Networks Sessions 2 Power Systems and Power Electronics Sessions, and 3 Control Systems Sessions covering following topics :

  • Communications: source-channel coding, turbo codes, trellis coded modulation, CDMA, ADSL, and satellite communication
  • Control: nonlinear control, neuro-fuzzy control, process control, aircraft and spacecraft control, and robot control
  • Signal Processing: wavelets, multirate signal processing, audio and video coding, image processing, speech recognition, biomedical signal processing, channel equalisation
  • Networking: resource allocation, congestion control, QoS control, network monitoring and management, scheduling, topology design, and wireless networks.
  • Power Systems: generation control, motor control, and spacecraft power systems

The conference attracted about 200 participants from all over the world. Similarly, the pre-conference tutorials registered about 210 participants from industry, R&D and Academic Institutions in the country and few from abroad. ---
