REPORT ON THE ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING

The Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) of the IEEE Bangalore Section for the year 2001 was held on February 2, 2002 at Hotel Taj West End, Bangalore. The attendence was very good, about twice the number that attended the previous AGM. Yes, indeed we had about 220 members including their spouses attending, which also compared well with a similar large gathering we had at the Silver Jubilee of the Section earlier in July.

A brief session of tea helped the members and spouses mingle and get into the AGM mood. The AGM was chaired by the Chairman Prof. Rajgopal. Prof. Sankaran, Vice Chairman welcomed the enthusiastic AGM gathering, after which the AGM commenced its business agenda. The previous AGM's minutes, which had been distributed, were considered for adoption. Mr. P.N. Hiriyannnaiah proposed adoption of the minutes and Mr. U.V. Nayak seconded the same, and the minutes were duly adopted by the AGM.

Secretary's Annual Report

It was the turn of the Secretary, Mr. Anurag Tyagi, to present the Section's Annual Report, and present the highlights. There was a lot to report as the Section had substantial number of activities in 2001, not to mention the Silver Jubilee and the celebration of the same. The Section had been very active, conducting Tutorials, Workshops, Distinguished Lectures, Technical Talks, Annual Symposium, Paper Contests, Technical Colloquia and supporting various student activities. Typically lectures and Wokshops / Tutorials had been well-attended, showing increasing interest and participation by members and indicating relevance of the activities to the members and professionals.

Notable among the year's highlights were the Section's Silver Jubilee Celebrations in July and the Annual Symposium and Student Paper Contests in November. The Silver Jubilee was a gala gathering in great number, and has been reported in earlier newsletter with photographs. The Annual Symposium was too a great success with excellent papers and student participation, and the Student Paper Contest award amounts had been substantially enhanced.

The Secretary's Annual Report was proposed for adoption by Mr. U.V. Nayak and seconded by Mr. P. Madan, and was duly adopted by the AGM.

Treasurer's Financial Report

Mr. K. Ramakrishna, our Treasurer, presented the 2001 audited Accounts and Financial Report of the Section, and briefed the members on the highlights. The report presented a healthy financial position of the Section, with larger rebate from the HQ commensurate with the increase in membership, and good receipts from Tutorials and Workshops. As promised in the previous AGM, the audited accounts of the CCSP International Conference in July 2000 were also published for the AGM as part of the Financial Report. The net surplus from the CCSP has been transferred to the Section's funds.

Mr. K.N. Srinivasan proposed the Financial Report for adoption and Mr. K.N.S. Murthy seconded the same and the Report was adopted by the AGM .

Society Chapters and GOLD Reports

The Signal Processing Chapter has been active, conducting a conference too, and the Chapter's 2001 Report was presented by Prof. T.V. Sreenivas. CCEM (Computer, Communications and Engineering Management) Chapter had an active, eventful year and its report was briefly presented by Dr. V. Jayaram. CCEM has set up an IEEE Com Society library at UVCE for the benefit of all IEEE students and members. The EDSSC Chapter (Electron Devices and Solid State Circuits) was formed in October 2001. Prof. Rajgopal presented a brief report of the activities on behalf of Dr. Navakant Bhat, the Chapter Chairman. The Chapter has already made a good start on technical activities within the short time. Mr. A. Anoop presented a report on the activities of the GOLD Group.

Student Branch Reports

The student activities and student branches have showed very significant fillip in 2001, with the efforts of the Student Activities Chair Mr. Arjuna Rao Chavala. Presently there is a total of 19 Student Branches. A new student branch was formed at the (IIIT) Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore. Some of the student branches presented their reports. Prof. Suresh Jangamshetti, Branch Counselor presented a report on the activities of BEC Bagalkot Student Branch. The Student Branch Chairman, Mr. Harish, presented a report for MIT, Manipal. For UVCE Branch the report was presented by Ms. Srividya, Student Branch Chairman. Mr. Arjuna Rao Chavala presented the

reports on behalf of NIE Branch, Mysore and SJCE Branch, Mysore. Generally there has been significant pick up in the activities and interest shown by the student branches, not to mention the substantial increase in the student membership from 485 to 934.

The Student Paper Contest Awards

As started in the year 2000, the Paper Contest Awards were held as part of the Section's Annual Symposium, giving the opportunity for the contestants to present their papers in front of a panel of judges and to the Symposium audience. Prof. Vinod Sharma, as Convenor of the Symposium, helped conduct the contest and decide the prize winners.

In the the B R V Vardan Undergraduate Paper Contest, the First Prize with a cash award of Rs. 6000 was awarded to Y A P Shankar and Vijay R K of NIE, Mysore for their paper "Turbo Codes for WCDMA Systems". The Second Prize with a cash of Rs.4000 was awarded to P. Wadikar and Vikas Javali of Bhoomareddi College of Engineering, Hubli for their paper "A Simple Load balancing Scheme for Task Allocation in Parallel Machines".

In the Post-graduate Paper Contest, the First and only Prize with a cash of Rs.6000 was awarded to S C Sekhar of IISc, Bangalore, for his paper "Improved Robustness of Zero-Crossing Based Frequency Estimation".

Kudos to all the Prize Winners ! And look forward to greater participation in 2002 !

Presentation of the RAB GOLD Committee Certificate

The RAB GOLD Committee has awarded a Certificate to the Bangalore Section in recognition and appreciation of the leadership and Section's continued support to the IEEE Bangalore Section GOLD affinity Group. The Chairperson of the GOLD Group, Ms. Roopa Rani, presented the Certificate to the Section Chairman Prof. Rajgopal.

The Election

The member of the Nomination Committee Mr. K.N. Srinivasan presented the slate for the 2002 Executive Committee already announced, and conducted the proceedings for the election. The Nomination Committee consisted of Prof. H.P. Khincha as Chairman and Mr. K.N. Srinivasan and Dr. A.S. Prakasarao as members. In the absence of any nominations by petition, the members in the announced slate were declared elected unanimously by the General Body.

Broadcast features, in this issue, an introduction to the EXECOM 2002 members with their photos and brief biodatas for the benefit of members who could not attend the AGM. There is also a special separately printed sheet of the EXECOM names and contacts in this issue as a special handy reference to all members.

GOLD Execom Introduction

Mr. A. Anoop, the outgoing GOLD Chairman introduced the newly elected GOLD Executive Committee, headed by Ms. Roopa Rani, the new Chairman.

Address by the Chairman-Elect and the Chairman

Prof. Sankaran, the Chairman-Elect, thanked the outgoing Chairman and EXECOM committee and solicited their support and cooperation to help grow the future activities of the Section. The Chairman, Prof. Rajgopal, highlighted that the Section is strong and active, with healthy traditions, with a high level of technical activities, a quantum jump in membership and sound financials. He indicated that he has given his vision for future activities of the Section in the December 2001 Broadcast issue.

Other Matters

Ameya Bhagwat of ISRO proposed that seminar be conducted in the area of Power Electronics and Converters. Prof. Rajgopal suggested that members may come up with suggestions for topics for conducting seminars on topics of interest to members and the industry at large. He also requested the members to suggest names of speakers to conduct the seminars. He also mentioned that members can give suggestions to improve activities of the Section through the Section website www.ieee.org/bangalore

Vote of Thanks

Dr. Surendra Pal thanked all members and spouses for attending the AGM. He also thanked all the officers, members and volunteers for making the AGM a grand success and enjoyable.

The lively and well-attended AGM concluded with a dinner and comeraderie of the members.
