   Profile of Chapter Chair

 

Dr.G.V.Rao, Ph.D., Senior Member, IEEE- IAS/PES has held responsible positions in G.E.C of India Ltd, started his own business in 1983, and is currently the Chairman/Managing Director of Rowsons Marketing Pvt Ltd, marketing all types of Transformers, Unitised Sub-stations etc. He has published a manual on Transformers, in the form of Question and Answers, and booklets on Capacitors, Resin Cast Transformers, Voltage Controllers etc.. He has conducted Technical seminars on Power & Distribution Transformers, Industrial Servo Voltage Controllers, Mobile Sub-stations, Fire Prevention Systems for Power & Distribution Transformers, Capacitors, Resin Cast Dry Type Maintenance Free Transformers, Unitised Package Sub-stations, Ventilation systems etc. He has produced his own video cassette & CD-ROM for Unitised Package Sub-station arrangements. Er. Rao's entrepreneurial spirit and appeal continue to proliferate as he has over 53 years' professional experience. We are proud of his accomplishments, in his profession and in our society.

List of Contributions to IEEE:
Er.G.V.Rao was PES Madras Chapter's Treasurer in 1999 & 2000 and Chapter Vice Chairman-II in 2001 subsequently elevated to Chapter chair from 2003 to April 2006. He has given six Technical presentations at the local PES workshops and seminars and presided over the PES meetings when the Chapter Chairman was away in U.S. during January and February 2001.

Awards:

  • He was awarded IEEE PES Outstanding Chapter Engineer  Award in a grand manner at Hotel Savera, Madras.
  • The Great Chatrpathi Marata Life Time Achievement Award for the year 2003.
  • Doctorate conferment of Doctor of Philosophy in Marketing Management from the Inter American University of Humanistic Studies, Florida, USA, IEEE – PES Madras chapter was proud enough in obtaining high performance Chapter Award for the year 2002 & 2004, under his able leadership

1. Lecture meeting  on `VOLTAGE STABILITY WITH POWER SAVING METHOD’ on 29th April  2006

A Lecture meeting  on `Voltage Stability with Power Saving method’ was organized on 29th April 2006 at Rajapalayam for Arumugha Group of Companies, Rajapalayam  jointly with Rowsons Marketing Pvt Ltd, Chennai – 600 004.   Dr.G.V.Rao, Chapter Chair IAS  Madras Chapter and Mr.P.Sudhakar, IAS member attended the meeting.  Mr.P.Ganesan, General Manager presided over the meeting  12 Electrical Engineers and Supervisors attended the meeting. 

2.`LATEST TRENDS IN TRANSFORMER TECHNOLOGIES’ on 1st June 2006

A Technical meeting  on `Latest Trends  in Transformer Technologies for various industrial application’ was organized on 1st June 2006 at Rajapalayam for M/s. Rajasekar Group of Industries jointly with Rowsons Marketing Pvt Ltd, Chennai.  Dr.G.V.Rao, Chairman IAS Madras Chapter and Member Mr.P.Sudhakar and Mr.K.Muthukannan and Mr.M.Muthu attended the  meeting.  Meeting headed by Mr.A.Rajasekar, Managing Director and 18 Engineers of the Group of Companies attended.

3. Lecture meeting on `FAIL SAFE MAINTENANCE FREE DRY TYPE TRANSFORMERS’ and `ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING’ on 15th June 2006

A Lecture meeting  on `Fail Safe Maintenance Free Dry Type Transformers’ and `Energy Efficient Lighting’ was organized on 15th  June 2006 at Trichy for M/s. Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Seam Less Tube Manufacturing Plant jointly with Rowsons Marketing Pvt Ltd, Chennai.  Mr.V.V.S.Srinivasa Rao, Mr.P.Sudhakar, Mr.K.Palaniappan and Mr.M.Muthu attended the  meeting.  Meeting headed by Mr.Stephen Xavier, Manager Sub-station and Plant Maintenance and Mr.S.Chandrasekar, Asst.Manager and  14 Electrical Engineers of the Maintenance Department were present.

       4. .Codissia Trade Fair (27th July to 31st July 2006)

Membership application  forms and other journals connected with IEEE were displayed during the exhibition and the stalls were  managed by Mr.V.S.Srinivasa Rao, Secretar, IEEE - IAS (Madras Chapter) and Mr.P.Sudhakar, Member IEEE - IAS (Madras Chapter).  Students and other engineers visited the stalls were informed suitably to become member of IEEE etc..   The total number visitors were nearly 470 including 20 IEEE members.   A CD-Rom about IEEE was displayed to the visitors.

5. A Seminar on' LATEST TREND IN TRANSFORMER TECHNOLOGY'  on 9th September 2006

A seminar was conducted at  The Residency Hotel at Coimbatore on 9th September 2006 on `Latest Trent in Transformer Technology'.  which was sponsored by M/s. Indo Tech Transformers Ltd, Madras.  Dr.G.V.Rao, Chairman, IEEE - IAS (Madras Chapter) welcoming the gathering  and spoke about Transformers with  Super Conductors/Fluid Filled Transformers and also a brief on  IEEE activities.  The Chief Guest was Mr.M.Veluchamy, Sr.Electrical Inspector to the Govt.of Tamil Nadu to presided over the seminar and also spoke on Safety Procedures.   Mr.P.S.Jagdish, President Indian Tranformers Manufacture Association and also Director M/s. Indo Tech Transformers Ltd spoke about the Current Scenario of manufacturing actitivites and also the developments in the Transformer segment. M/s. Basavaraj Angadi and Dilip Patel  of M/s. E.I.Dupont  India Pvt Ltd, Mumbai presented a technical paper on `Open Ventilated Dry Type Transformer'.  The other speakers were Mr.S.Ganesan,  Mr.T.V.Josepsh, Mr.Raghavan,  presented papers  on  `Over view on Transformer Technology/Energy Efficient Transformers/Maintenance of Transformers' etc..  Mr.S.Rajavel, Vice Chairman IEEE - IAS Chapter and General Manager E.I & C Business Unit, M/s. Larsen & Toubro Ltd, ECC Division, Chennai spoke about `Gas Insulated Sub-station' and also summing up the semianr.  The CD's  were  played.  The total number of participants were 360  from various Industries, Electricity Boards, Railways, HT Contractor Association, Consultants,  Architects, Managing Directors, Faculties/Students, Plant Engineers  etc.. and a grand lunch was arranged. There was no delegation fee.

6. A Seminar on' “Industrial Power supplies & modern Technology”'  on 28th October 2006

A Technical Seminar was conducted ON 28TH October 2006 in association with  Tamil Nadu `A’ Grade  Electrical Contractors & Installation  Engineers  Association at Chennai on 28th  October 2006 at 36, Tag Centre, TTK Road, Chennai.

The seminar was on “Industrial Power supplies & modern Technology”. Welcome address was  given by Er.A.k.Venkatasamy, President, Tamil Nadu `A’ Grade  Electrical Contractors & Installation  Engineers  Association,  Chennai and the Key note address was given by Er.R.Subramanian, Chief  Electrical Inspector to the Govt.of Tamil Nadu.  Dr.G.V.Rao, Chairman, IEEE – IAS (Madras Chapter)  spoke on “Conservation of Energy” and also made a Audio visual presentation  on `Energy Environment’ consisting of Wind, Solar, Biomass, Lighting etc.. which was well appreciated by the participants.  Mr.S.Rajavel, Vice Chairman IEEE – IAS (Madras Chapter)  presented a paper on `Gas Insulated Sub-station’ by detailing the  parts and about the installation & Commissioning.  Mr.Dilip Patel, Consultant on behalf of M/s. E.I.Dupont India Ltd, Mumbai spoke on `Open Ventilated  Dry Type Transformers” with power point presentation.  Mr.V.V.S.Srinivasa Rao, Secretary, IEEE – IAS (Madras Chapter) presented a paper on “Latest development on Outdoor Lighting” highlighting the stainless steel  reflectors used in luminaries which gives 30% more illumination comparing the conventional ones, where by it reduces the wattage/fittings/cost. He also highlighted about the installation procedure  for High Mast & Mobile Mast Lighting towers.

 Mr.C.Sampath Kumar gave a presentation on the Current and also the forthcoming electrical modular switches for both domestic and Industrial  and for various applications. Mementos were given  to the  dignitaries and other VIPs who attended the same.  The Question and Answer session was very interesting and many contractors were happy about the seminar.  Mr.T.M.Bikkaji gave  Vote of Thanks and followed by a grand lunch  The total number of participants were 120 in spite of the  heavy rain and  inclement   weather.  Pictures attached.

7. A Seminar on' “Hybrid Vehicles/Fuel Cells'  on 14th December  2006

IEEE IAS - Madras Chapter along with SAE India arranged a technical lecture on Hybrid Vehicles/Fuel Cells at the premises of PSG College  of ZTechnology, Coimbatore on 14th December 2006.  The lecture was Dr.Kaushik Rajasekara of Rolls Royce (Air Craft Engine Division), USA.  The lecture  was appealing and appreciated by all the participants.  Mr.V.V.S.Srinivasa Rao, Secretary, IAS - Madras Chapter gave the Welcome Address on behalf of Dr.G.V.Rao, Chairman , IEEE IAS Madras Chapter.  Mr.R.Babu, Treasurer and Mr.J.Ananda Rao, Committee Member of IAS Madras Chapter gave away the mementos to the dignitaries.  MR.G.Chandras Mohan, HOD of Automobile Engineering of PSG College of Technology spoke on the Electric vehicles and introduced the speaker.  Mr.C.Nandagopalan, Vice Chairman, SAE India proposed a Vote of Thanks.  The total number of participants were 158 inclusive of few IEEE members.  Tea and snacks were arranged for the participants.

1. A Seminar on' Latest Trend in Transformer Technology' on the  10th  February 2007 ' 

A  Seminar was arranged at Taj Residency (Deccan) Five Star Hotel) on `Latest Trend in Transformer Technology' on the  10th  February 2007.  Apart from large attendees Mr.R.Kannan, Chairman, IEEE Hyderabad Section and Mr.C.Satish, Area Chapter Chair, Industry Application Society, Region 10 and Mr.Bharghav, Past  Chairman IEEE Hyderabad  Section  and few  members of IEEE Hyderabad and Madras Section attended the seminar, CEIG of Andhra Pradesh Mr.C.Vijaya Kumar was the Chief Guest.  The seminar was organized by Telugu nadu Electrical Contractor's Association (A Grade) in association with Indo Tech Transformers Ltd, Chennai and Rowsons Marketing Pvt LTd, Chennai .  The highlight of the Seminar was the most informative speech delivered and paper presented by Dr.G.V.Rao , Chairman , IEEE - IAS (Madras Chapter) on `Energy Efficient Transformers'.  He highlighted about Cast Resin Transformers, Open Ventilated Dry Type Transformers, R-Temp Fluid Filled Transformers with super conductors and Transformers with edible oil base. This was  well appreciated by one and all. The other speakers were,  Mr.P.S.Jagdish, President, Indian Transformers Manufacturers Association, New Delhi on `Transformer Industry in India'  Mr.T.V.Joseph, Vice President CQA, M/s. Indo Tech Transformers LTd, on `Significance of Power Transformers and Mobile Sub-stations'  Mr.Basavaraj Angadi and Mr.Dilip Patel, M/s. E.I.Dupont India Pvt Ltd, Mumbai on 'Open Ventilated Dry Type Transformers' with Nomex paper insulated.  The Seminar, with nearly 250 elite audience was concluded with a grand lunch.  The whole episode was informative, purposeful and  each member left the hall with enriched knowledge.

2. Seminar on `SOLAR AND WIND HYBRID SYSTEMS'’ on 8th June 2007

A Seminar on `Solar and Wind Hybrid Systems' was conducted on 8th June 2007 at Hotel Adyar Gate Sheraton Towers in Chennai.  Dr.G.V.Rao, Chapter Chair, IAS, Madras Chapter welcomed the gathering.  Mr.K.B.Thakur, M/s. Chloride International Ltd, Kolkata highlighted to the gathering the advantages of clean energy and about the solar and wind Hybrid systems.  The meeting was attended by 50 guests which included IEEE members.

3.Societal Meeting on 18th August 2007

A Societal meeting was conducted on 18th August 2007 at Petatchi Auditorium, Chennai.  The meeting was inaugurated by Dr.G.V.Rao, IEEE - IAS (Madras Chapter) and Dr.Pappu Venugopal Rao spoke on the occasion.  The total guests were around 450 including members. High Tea was arranged.

4. Technical Seminar on `Insulating Materials in Transformers'  on 20th August 2007

A Technical seminar on `Insulating Materials in Transformers' was conducted in Chennai on 20th August 2007, Mr.S.Ganesan, Advisor presented to the gathering the latest materials  used in manufacture of transformers  and their  contribution in increasing the performance of the transformers.  The total  guests included 60 members including Engineers and  Consultants.

     5. 22nd September 2007

On 22nd September 2007, Michael Farady Birthday was celebrated where in Engineers  and Members of IAS, Madras Chapter showered glowing  tributes and also discussed  about the latest in today's engineering  world.

1. A meeting  on ' Global Warming and Energy Concerns'  on 19th January 2008

A meeting was organized on `Global Warming and Energy Concerns' at the Hotel Palmgrove, Chennai on 19th January 2008.  Dr.G.V.Rao, Chapter Chair, IAS (Madras) presented a paper and audio visual presentation on Global Warming and its effect on our planet earth.  Mr.S.Mahadevan presented a paper on Energy Concerns and  about Energy Saving Techniques.  The meeting was attended by 50 guests including members.  High Tea was arranged. There was no delegation fee.

2. A Technical Seminar on “Dupont ReliatraN Open Ventilated Dry Type Transformer'   on 16th February 2008

A Technical Seminar was organized in Gokulam Park Inn, Kochi, Kerala  on `Dupont ReliatraN Open Ventilated Dry Type Transformer' on 16th February 2008.  Dr.G.V.Rao, Chapter Chair, IAS (Madras Chapter) and Mr.Thomas Lim, Applications Research Manager, M/s. E.I.Dupont Company (Singapore) Pvt. Ltd., Singapore  spoke on the technology and advantages of `Dupont ReliatraN' Open Ventilated Dry Type Transformers.

A special  Key Note address was given by  Mr.K.K.Unni, Chief Electrical Inspector to the Government of Kerala,  Mr.K.T.Mohan Krishnan, President , M/s. Indo Tech Transformers Ltd, Chennai, Mr.Basavaraj Angadi and Mr.Dilip Patel, M/s. E.I.Dupont India Private Ltd., Mumbai spoke on the occasion.  The meeting was attended by 160 guests including leading Contractors, Consultants, Engineers from Public Sector Companies and by the members . A grand lunch was arranged. There was a no delegation fee.

3.Factory Visit on 19th February 2008

A Factory visit was organized to Thirumazhisai and Kancheepuram on 19th February 2008.  The Engineers and members of various Industries  from different places  about 38 visited the factories first at Thirumazhisai for Power, Distribution and Open Ventilated  Dry Type Transformer factory and learnt the nuances in the manufacture then they  visited Kancheepuram factory where extra High Voltage Transformers are manufactured and their testing facilities were shown to the visiting guests. A lunch was arranged. There was no Delegation fee.

4. A Lecture Programme  on  “ Trends in Automotive Steering Systems with Advances in Electrical Actuators and Control'' on the  4th July 2008.  

A  Distinguished Lecture program was organized by Industry Application Society in association with Indian Institute of Technology, Madras on 4th July 2008  at the Electrical Sciences Block Seminar Hall.  The Guest Speaker  was Dr.Tomy  Sebastian, Chief Scientist, Delphi Steering  Systems Inc., Michigan, United States on the topic `Trends in Automotive Steering Systems with Advances in Electrical  Actuators and Control'.  The Lecture was attended by 75 guests which included students, Faculty Members, Consultant and IEEE members.

5. A Technical Seminar on  “ Energy Efficient High Mast Lighting  Systems' on the  18th July 2008.  '

A  Technical seminar was organized in Hotel Palmgrove, Chennai on `Energy Efficient High Mast Lighting Systems' on 18th July 2008.  The technical paper was presented by Mr.L.Satish, Head - Operations  of  M/s. GVRR.  Dr.G.V.Rao, Chapter Chair , IAS (Madras Chapter) welcomed the gathering.  The seminar was attended by 35 guests including members.
