Why IP-over-WDM

• IP-enabled services grow significantly each year and upgrade existing SONET facility to higher than OC-192 is always expensive and not flexible

  • existing SONET self-healing ring is an example

• Overhead due to layer internetworking (IP-over-WDM) is minimal

• WDM flexibility motivates the dynamic nature of IP

• Lower cost and faster provisioning than its SONET counterpart

However,

• IP routers designed primarily for IP-over-WDM networks could require Terabits/s throughput
  • 128 channels with OC-48 line rate per channel
