The meeting started at 6:30PM
The section chair reported a 2.6% increase in membership in CY 2001.
The treasurer gave his report. There is approximately 10K in the checking account and 9K in concentration banking, we are waiting on the rebate, the treasurer should invoice the University of Maryland for a $500 advertisement in the newsletter.
The secretary presented the minutes, which were accepted.
Reports
The Annapolis subsection will have Merrill Skolnick as the speaker at the March meeting; AES will contact Dave Boyd about making it a joint meeting.
COMS - Garth MacKenzie requested that the next meeting be held in conjunction with the April ExCom Meeting. The topic will be on GIS. This suggestion was accepted, Garth will report to the secretary on the details of the meeting ASAP.
Jeff Friedhoffer reported that the COMSOC chapter had a March meeting on wireless and has an up coming April meeting on optical networking research.
The EMS chair said that he is still trying to set up a talk about a new Institute on Biomedical Imaging and Engineering either this month or in April. He also reported that his chapter was invited to participate in the Volunteers in Medical Engineering (VME) which helps handicapped and disabled people by using technology to overcome their disability. Three or four people from EMS will attend with the chapter paying for their dinner.
EMC reported they have a meeting coming up in March at Capitol College, this is a joint meeting with the DC chapter. They will also be participating in the AMEREM Ultra Wideband EMC Symposium in Annapolis in June.
Bill Dixon will attend the PACE conference in Dallas. A motion was passed for Carole Carey to attend this conference.
PES - the Engineers week dinner was successful, 80 attended, 60 students and teachers, 20 engineers. The cost was $2K; a bill will be presented to the section for half of this amount. An article was requested for the newsletter. The distributed power generation course being offered by PES has 14 students. They are interested in finding someone in the financial world to talk about the impact of ENRON.
Robot Challenge reported there are 54 teams and 22 schools. Three teams/schools signed at the Engineers week dinner sponsored by PES. It is expected that 15 teams will participate in automated control vs 5 in 2001. The challenge will be held on 7 and 20 April. The chair is still looking for a few more judges.
WIE reported that they have a web site under construction, ewh.ieee.org/r2/washsec/wie. They are setting up a lecture series, in April Professor Espey-Wilson will discuss Life as an Engineer, In September Dr. Pam Mack, Chair of the EE dept at Morgan State will be the lecturer, and in "November there will be a panel discussion. There was also a discussion about what an affinity group was. It is an issues oriented vs a technical group and has to meet at least five times per year to qualify for a rebate of $150. The question was asked if both the Baltimore and Washington Sections can get credit for the WIE meetings?
John Dentler discussed the sections congress. He is going to contact BGE about contributing to conference. He asked for ideas on how the IEEE could be made better.
Carole Carey said that the Engineering Society of Baltimore has asked that we send them the $300 donation that had been promised. She also said that the deadline for the newsletter was mid March.
Tom Patton reported on the chapter chair meeting/dinner on 8 May. The speaker will be from Peabody institute and will talk about the Virtual Orchestra and give a presentation same. The dinner will be held at Snyders from 6:00-10:30 PM. Anyone who has awards or other recognitions that they want presented at the dinner should let him know ASAP. Invitations will be extended to Congressman Cardin, to all IEEE fellows in the section and to the UMBC student chapter.

It was announced that Neville Jacobs achieved the level of Senior Member.
Old Business
a. IES has applied for concentration banking, did PES get their funds transferred to concentration banking, AMPTT is going to liquidate the account and send the funds to the section, and Annapolis still has a local account.
New Business
a. A motion was passed to send Carole Carey to the PACE conference in Dallas in April 2002
Everyone was asked to think about suggestions for IEEE and region level awards.
John Dentler is going to fill out the form needed for the section to apply for the Outstanding Section award.
The MTT chapter in DC requested support from the section in their bid to bring the IMS conference to Baltimore in 2010. A motion was passed to tell them that the section would support their bid. There was one abstention on this motion. Vil will contact the MTT chapter to notify them of our support.
A motion was passed to approve the purchase of Microsoft Front Page to support the section web page.
8. Action items
Chair to contact chapters for potential candidates for secretary of the section.
Treasurer to invoice UM for $500 ad.
Newsletter article on Engineers week dinner from PES
"Sky Crab," should be trademarked. Randy Bruce getting information on the cost of doing this.
Can both the Baltimore and Washington Sections get credit for the WIE meetings?
